89X returns?

A corporate format will never compete with the nostalgia of a hometown legendary station. I don't think polished wins any points when it comes to youthful memories.

If you think 89x is being, in any way, programmed “locally” you have great grass. It is nostalgia in name only and Toronto will lose interest soon enough. Guess I’m not lost in the nostalgia of a voice guy like others are. Just hearing it how it is and how it is is almost nothing different than what already exists in the marketplace

So, you joined today to shit talk the station? I doubt you will convince many here about a station (Amp 98.7) that no one cares about. Most here have low expectations and are still stoked.

Does Alt 98.7 use VT from other markets? The website is certainly has zero local content...

I’m like you! I’m thrilled with 89x coming back and it’s made this retired old hag excited to talk about radio again. I havent Been this engaged since I left. When I did a search for radio in Detroit I found this after posting on the other one and here we are! Hate that opinions become so visceral and angry I can attest. If that’s the tone here I’ll gladly pack up and catch you some other time. Until then it’s okay to have differing opinions and hear other ideas. At least it is for me! Have a wonderful night

I've been enjoying the nonstop music with no DJ chatter and no commercial breaks on 89X today.

Alt 98.7's audio processing sounds atrocious when listening on decent equipment. Middle treble frequencies are overemphasized to absurd levels; the songs sound nothing like the way the artist intended. Whoever is responsible for the processor settings at 98.7 is incompetent.

I’ll gladly pass the torch to someone else when it comes to audio quality. That’s never been something I ever noticed. Knowing the people there (that are left) I’m betting they know what they’re doing.

Agree on the commercial freeness. I like DJ’s! They were what kept me employed as a sales dude for so long so I’m hoping they come back soon!

Checked my car radio a few times today and all I ever picked up where I'm at was classical music (presumably WIAA FM) with an occasional smattering of 89x.

This summer was the weakest for dx reception I can ever remember.

I just parked in front of my first house in Saline...and I have a Smile FM translator hot and heavy on 88.7

Never mind. I pulled forward two feet and got 89x back. They were playing fun.

I'm at Michigan Ave and State St. and it's struggling a little bit. Not shocking; WLEN tends to pop in quite well also.

Back in the day, indoor reception of 89X was shaky in Ann Arbor. Barely stronger than WIOT. Always came in well in the car, though, unless I was within a couple miles of WEMU's tower.

The stations broadcasting from Detroit's NW side (97.9, 98.7, 100 3, 103.5) always boomed in.

There is a new 88.7 in Owosso as well (WHSR). I believe they are directional to the north, but would imagine they would cause some issues on the fringe. I remember years ago being able to get 89X fairly regularly in the Lansing area, albeit scratchy. Not the case anymore.

I'm curious about the rest of Brad Gibb's resume. So we know he was at 89X for maybe a few years, 1998-2000 or so. What else has he done? Do you think he has been in radio on the Canadian side since?

I think WOMC uses the same crappy processor & possibly the same processor settings as WDZH.

The same maladies appear on the handful of songs that air on both stations.

The settings work better for 104.3's playlist, although I still hear plenty of songs on that station that sound "off."

98.7 played "Breed" by Nirvana a little while ago, and I was in awe by how terrible that song's rhythm section sounded with 98.7's processing settings.

The music sounds like it is being piped through an empty Maxwell House coffee can.
