89X returns?

Semi-kidding, but: Do you think there's a sound library somewhere for people launching radio stations, that's all audio clips like: "Here we go." "Ready." "Let's go." "Launch."

In another life I worked for a company that did just this. TM Century. Now TM studios and mostly AI generated.

I heard Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" earlier. I'm not sure when the last time I heard it on any terrestial radio station.

I'm pretty sure I heard "Stargazing "a little while ago, as well as "Team" by Lorde earlier, so they're playing some of the pop hits that didn't go over well in 2013.

It's cool hearing the Tragically Hip, especially since 98.7 won't ever play it.

I feel like they're doing a something for everyone approach playlist wise, but I'm not sure how many casual listeners are into that approach.

Fascinating hearing all the opinions. Have to say it’s as engaged I’ve been in a long time. Kudos there.

Minus the terrible Canadian songs they have chosen on inaugural broadcast, there hasn’t been anything I’ve heard that I haven’t heard somewhere else in the city at some point. From Tragically Hip (cool fm) and Bowie and Depeche Mode to Smoke 2 Joints. These aren’t new to the airwaves and almost all have a place. I don’t see where this version of 89x fits in at all.

CBC Music 89.9 has a much steadier signal in my car than 89X. Too bad 89.9's processing is whisper quiet; they play decent music on occasion.

I mean, I'm not expecting to hear a bunch of songs I've never heard on the radio before. With the state of radio now, whenever you hear something a bit more rare and interesting, it's notable. I just want a lot of variety. They're playing a lot more variety than Alt 98.7, I'd imagine.

I actually disagree with you on this. I find 987 far more listenable and polished after what I’ve heard today. I like the people on the air especially Ian when I was living there. It actually made me turn over a while and it was so much more cohesive. I hear variety and don’t disagree but variety without a strategy is what today has been. Pretty scattered and sloppy, if I’m being honest. I didnt expect this kind of incoherence on an inaugural broadcast. I always appreciate thoughtful discussion but I am staying curious and open minded and not so absolute as you seem to be . As always bring on the opinions! I think It’s been fun today

If you think 89x is being, in any way, programmed “locally” you have great grass. It is nostalgia in name only and Toronto will lose interest soon enough. Guess I’m not lost in the nostalgia of a voice guy like others are. Just hearing it how it is and how it is is almost nothing different than what already exists in the marketplace

I've been enjoying the nonstop music with no DJ chatter and no commercial breaks on 89X today.

Alt 98.7's audio processing sounds atrocious when listening on decent equipment. Middle treble frequencies are overemphasized to absurd levels; the songs sound nothing like the way the artist intended. Whoever is responsible for the processor settings at 98.7 is incompetent.

So, you joined today to shit talk the station? I doubt you will convince many here about a station (Amp 98.7) that no one cares about. Most here have low expectations and are still stoked.

Does Alt 98.7 use VT from other markets? The website is certainly has zero local content...

The only Detroit based DJ on 98.7 is Julia.

Everyone else is piped in from out of state. Some dayparts, such as weekday evenings & overnights, are jockless.

The PD and MD of 98.7 (Christine Malovetz and Brad Steiner, respectively) are each located out of state and perform similar duties at a few of Audacy's alternative stations across the country. Both were involved with the ill-fated Alt 92.3 in New York and were based there.
