106.7 WLLZ quietly segues to mostly 1990s to 2010s rock

Unread post by MWmetalhead »

Wow. They are apparently gunning straight for WRIF now. No currents, but I did see a couple recurrents.

I like the updated playlist! I could live without the wussy alternative tracks, though. I hate Gorillaz, and I don't need to hear a lame band like Semisonic multiple times daily or even multiple times weekly.

Also looks like major air staff changes are afoot. Rob Brandt is no longer voice tracking afternoons, for example. Josh Innes has been demoted to nights, a move with which I disagree. I liked him in mornings.

Very few 80s or 70s songs are heard on WLLZ now. Down to three such tracks an hour.

That definitely will help WCSX.

WCSX (yes, WCSX) played Harvester of Sorrow by Metallica this afternoon in the 3PM hour.

I think hell hath frozen over.

WLLZ plays that song semi regularly, but never thought I'd hear it in the afternoon on CSX.

This is the way too do it. The Jimi Hendrix / Boston music just did not fit in with this stuff. Hopefully this boosts the ratings

Sweet Child 'O Mine by GNR and Paranoid by Black Sabbath were the next two songs. Van Halen played immediately before.

Interesting. Wonder who ultimately made that decision: PD or corporate?

Don’t you mess with The Dan.

Isn’t this the same music genre that WLLZ originally came on the air with? “The new generation of classic rock”? Seems as it lasted for a bit then they over corrected and started putting on Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, Led Zeppelin, etc.

Regardless, since this is the genre I listen to a lot of SXM’s Turbo, sounds like I’d like it

Time for 106.7 to change it's image, drop the WLLZ calls and get a new name and idenity. The whole WLLZ thing has done nothing for the station. Since the format is being updated, its idenity needs to as well. The WLLZ calls are more identified to old school classic rock.

I wouldn't have....in 2001. It's 2026. That kind of stuff can be worked out

I largely agree.

The people at iHM making strategic decisions for their Rock brands are mostly clueless, though, starting with Lisa Worden.

Some folks at RadioDiscussions did detective work and noticed WLLZ now runs the same music log as Salt Lake City's low rated Rock 106.7. Not a big surprise. Both stations share the same PD.

WLLZ branding isn’t hurting them either. I don’t see a reason to change that yet. The playlist is the main culprit.

The people who listened to the real WLLZ in its heyday are now in their 50s and 60s.

None of the original personalities can be heard on the modern day WLLZ anymore, with the possible exception of Ann Carlini. She is no longer heard in weekdays. I have no idea if she still handles a weekend air shift on occasion.

I heard her last weekend.

Well, looks like I may need to bump 96.3 out in favor of one of these two. Interesting. I am so used to both being butt rock. But I also now routinely listen to 104.3 and my teenage self would laugh so hard knowing that.
