The 40-year Audacy-owned talk station in Las Vegas announced today it will cease operations as of September 1.

KDWN was reduced to a translator a few years ago, now KXNT is shutting down completely. Sad to see another 50,000 watt AM go away.

The one thing I remember about KXNT was Glenn Haege, known as the "Master Handyman" used to mention that station quite a bit, as one of his primary affiliates when his show was heard nationally. As for other Audacy AM stations that could go away, maybe start with WXYT-AM 1270 Detroit, formerly known as "The Bet Detroit" now just 24/7 Westwood One Sports and occasional local weather updates. The only local play-by-play on that station was Detroit Tigers spring training games. WWJ and WOMC seem to be the stations used for overflow games from 97.1

That's the only reason why they keep it. Overflow. You NEVER know when there may be too many games and not enough signals.

AM radio reception in the desert is absolutely awful.

I believe the land that hosts the KXNT towers was under an option agreement to a real estate developer for big money. That deal likely has now closed.

Las Vegas has too many music oriented stations on the FM band. One of the ratings basement dwellers should consider a flip to either news/talk, locally-based hot talk (not the trash version of the format KXTE briefly tried), or sports/talk.

My vote would be to flip one of Beasley's shitty low rated FM stations to sports/talk.

That’s interesting, I’ve never heard that before. I always assumed that region would receive all sorts of signals from afar but I never considered reception would be bad. Is it because ground conductivity is poor due to lack of water, or different soil conditions, or something else?

Note to self: as an MW DX’er, don’t move to the desert.

Exactly. Very sandy soil = poor AM ground wave conductivity.

Been years since I’ve been to Las Vegas, but the mountainous desert area between there and Reno wasn’t great about four or five years ago. Partly due to being isolated, but as I recall the strongest and about only signal I could pick up was KNBR San Francisco.
