Malloy was traded to the Rays for the infamous cash considerations. As I said in the ‘25 thread, he didn’t really fit or perform with the Tigers.
Skubal has asked for $32 million while the Tigers are only offering $19. Unless they settle before the hearing (most players do), it can only be one figure or the other. Yes you read right, they offered a million less than Flaherty.
If the Tigers are serious in keeping him, offer him 5 years and 210 million. That’s 40m a year and going up a million every year after the first year.
Most fans like myself would say that’s a valiant effort. If he’s serious about wanting to stay in Detroit, he’d take it. Unfortunately, he hired Bore-us who truly can be a scumbag by whipsawing teams against each other.

That's not going to be enough money to keep him. There would need to be a sizable deferred compensation component on top of the numbers you offered.
$225 million over 5 years in cash plus $50 million to $75 million in deferred compensation payable at $10 million to $15 million a year starting in year 6 might be what it takes.
This year's arbitration numbers point out the many smaller windows facing the Tigers besides the big Skubal window. Just imagine the money that these players will make when they hit the open market:

With the exception of Ohtani (who’s a two way / position player), I’m trying to think of any other pitcher out there making more than $40 million a year. It might take more money but he’d still be an elite player with one of highest salaries out there at that price…
He earned $40 million in his one season with Boston, of which he received $15 million last year. The Red Sox owe him $5 million in January 2028 and $2 million each June from 2035-44.
Of course, in the negotiations, Boras will also be pointing at the $43 million contracts that the Mets gave to both Verlander and Scherzer. And the Tigers will point at the trades that occurred after both of the contracts were signed.
