IP addresses-is my network hacked?

Unread post by MotorCityRadioFreak »

My IP address was coming up from Alabama when I was working on a project for a company(I do gig work). They said that it pinged Alabama. I have WOW! and thought they used Detroit and Chicago for IPs. Did something changed or did I get rerouted and hacked by bad actors? I tried IP config in my computer, and it would not stay on screen. Is there a legit site to check my IP. If MW reads this, can you verify I have a MI or Chicago IP?

Network operators change IP routes all of the time. Those Geo-reporters (that GUESS where your IP address is located) are just that - a guess. I've lived in Essexville for 20+ years; and in fact have had the same static IP address for 20+ years. One site will say I'm located in Alpena, whereas another site will say I'm in Saginaw. My actual routing goes from Bay City to Allendale (Spectrum's head peering point), so technically never touches Saginaw.

https://www.ipchicken.com will give you your current (public) IP address.
https://www.maxmind.com/en/locate-my-ip-address will give you your IP address's location, based on their database.

Knology acquired them, and in turn Knology was acquired by WOW!.

That could definitely explain it. Nothing to worry about :)

I'm showing an IP associated with Graceba Total Communications, which is a defunct Alabama-based broadband services provider.

Perhaps WOW acquired a portion of their former assets?

Thank you. I did check the IP yesterday, and it said a Macomb County city. Weird how they are flexing it back and forth. Just was concerned.
