How does FedEx work?

Sent something FedEx from Central California to Orange County in Southern California 2 day. That's about 250 miles south. Tracking it, it went to Los Angeles, then to the Memphis hub, and then to my destination. I am sure this is the FedEx design and works, but how is that more efficient?
The censorship king from out of state.

Pretty much everything goes through their Memphis hub if it's going somewhere else in the country. Makes it VERY predictable rather than having multiple hubs all over the country.

If I sent this next-day, it would have gone thru Memphis as well?

Fed Ex Express is a separate operation from Fed Ex Ground, which uses a different spoke and hub.

Fed Ex Express is 100% secure, and the plane from SLO goes to Memphis every night. It seems crazy, but it is efficient to have just one plant at Memphis at a much lower labor and operating cost.

Currently FedEx is building a separate airport next to INDY International that should gradually replace Memphis, but mostly for international parcels.
