I'd like to see shootouts abolished and a single 10 minute OT period for regular season games.

Granting a point to the loser in OT seems like a weak consolation prize to justify shootouts. I agree, they're cheap.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Mon Apr 13, 2026 8:51 amI'd like to see shootouts abolished and a single 10 minute OT period for regular season games.
I feel the same about college football overtime rules, and to a lesser extent those of NFL overtimes, though the latter at least requires a touchdown to end things immediately without a necessitated change of possession.

Re: Detroit Red Wings 2025-26
I watched last year's post-season press conference on YouTube, then watched videos of hosts on 97.1 reacting to it. These hosts concluded that Yzerman sounded like he had a lifetime contract.
On the Fox 2 Sportsworks show last night, the panel talked about big trades this summer, with no untouchables except Seider. That might be the only big change we'll see this offseason. The panel predicted that the focus of the trading would be a scoring center to help out Larkin.

I would listen to offers for Larkin. He's underperformed in my opinion.
I agree, shootouts suck. The minors do it as well. I've seen both Grand Rapids and Toledo lose because of it.

Re: Detroit Red Wings 2025-26
This game means nothing to Detroit. Why didn’t Yzerman bring up goalies Cossa or Postava to have McLellan evaluate their talent in an actual game? We know Talbot isn’t going to be back next year, there’s zero reason to have in active, yet alone play him.

Re: Detroit Red Wings 2025-26
The game mattered to Tampa Bay, that’s why. They are still playing for playoff seeding. The Wings are obligated to play their best lineup, and they’re not going to fake injuries just so they can fly Postava to Florida for a couple days.

Re: Detroit Red Wings 2025-26
You list Talbot or Gibson as a healthy scratch. Easy as that. Why does Detroit care if the game matters to Tampa? Other teams out of the race use this time to evaluate. Why tout these prospects if you aren’t going to even play them in an NHL game? As much as I like to see the Griffins go deep in the playoffs, the big club is more important. Yzerman drafted Cossa and signed Postava. If these guys are busts, it’s another reason he needs to go.
Re: Detroit Red Wings 2025-26
Well, the NHL cares, first of all. Rules of competition and all that. Professional pride. I guarantee you no other teams, unless totally hamstrung by injuries at the NHL level, are calling up their minor league rosters now to evaluate. And I bet you can't name any that are, specifically.edj wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2026 4:14 am You list Talbot or Gibson as a healthy scratch. Easy as that. Secondly, hockey rosters are not managed like baseball. You have a daily salary cap (both min and max) and you can't blindly option guys back and forth on a near-daily basis in hockey like you can in baseball. In hockey, you carry a 23-man NHL roster, dressing 18 skaters and two goalies per game, and NOBODY carries three goalies, so the three extra skaters on your roster on game days are your "healthy scratches." Except, in the Wings' case right now, they have two guys (Rasmussen and Appleton) who are injured and not playing but are not on injured reserve. That's why Shine, Mazur and Brandsegg-Nygard are playing right now. Teams can use "emergency callups" in the event of injury (like when Postava was called up last week when Gibson appeared to be dinged), but once the injury is resolved, the emergency ends and the called-up player must be sent back. Further, emergency callups are position-for-position only; the Wings can't, for instance, call up a goalie as an emergency if a skater gets hurt. Gibson and Talbot are both healthy, and that's why you can't just blindly call up a minor league goalie to play by making one a healthy scratch. It's an inefficient use of a roster spot.

Yeah, couldn’t have used Cossa or Postava. What a joke.

Yzerman and McLellan end of season press conference at 11am today. 97.1 will carry it live. Not sure if it will be live on the Wings website, YouTube, or elsewhere. There are many season ending media sessions with Wings players at https://www.nhl.com/redwings/video/ but I'm assuming they weren't aired live and added later.

The Griffins and Walleye made the playoffs, so if you want live pro playoff hockey without traveling too far, there you go.
If only that could materialize to the Wings.
