Great article about the decline in LOCAL news coverage and the impact on broadcasters like Sinclair.

The Flint-Saginaw market is a prime example of this decline in local news coverage. Over h the past (two) decades, our local newspapers, The Flint Journal and Saginaw News, have reduced publications and cut staff. Radio stations that used to have a news staff have gone to national syndicated programming. And local TV stations like 25/66 have seen cuts and are filling time with national must-run corporate propaganda.
One good development is the startup Fkint Beat by publisher Jiquanda Johnson, formerly of the Flint News and for a brief moment 25-66.

Johnson is helping fill the gap with a very slim staff, but is employing journalists and promoting diversity in coverage. Will it be able to survive as a solely digital publication remains to be seen. But the Flint Beat staff is filling an important community coverage need with a no nonsense, straightforward, hyperlocal approach toward news.
