Graphics Misspellings
Graphics Misspellings
Anyone notice a lot of misspellings in local news graphics, like at channel 2? Do they have interns or someone like that do those things?
Re: Graphics Misspellings
They sure don't have a Spell Checker
Re: Graphics Misspellings
Graphics are not done in-house, bit rather at a contractor facility, usually in Texas or Florida.
They are provided scripts prior to air from a producer or others with the newscast.
Errors in spelling or content usually are not quickly correctible, as they're usually not seen until played out live during a show. Even then, frequently no one except for a few picky viewers, notices, or cares.

A spell-check program might not have helped on this one, but a real local journalist should have caught it right away:

I saw them frequently during my entire 36 years at WIXIE. I ran chyron for a few years and the super requests we would receive from the news department frequently contained spelling errors. At the end of my time there I was operating the automation in conjunction with the director and I still would catch spelling errors. I frequent Fox News and spot spelling errors. Nothing changes..............

Is it really THAT hard to take 15 seconds to read a 5 word chyron?SixPlusOne wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 2:31 pmI saw them frequently during my entire 36 years at WIXIE. Re: Graphics Misspellings
This isn’t usually the case with lower thirds or topical fullscreen graphics. Maybe with some special projects, but most of the daily news graphics are usually created locally by inserting information into a graphic template.SolarMax wrote: ↑Sun Oct 10, 2021 10:05 pmGraphics are not done in-house, bit rather at a contractor facility, usually in Texas or Florida.

Re: Graphics Misspellings
Graphics can also be inserted via script automation bypassing a technician. The drawback is very often the producer or reporter not taking the time or the care to insert EXACT information in scripting. I saw it all the time. Often lazy, but mostly time-pressured editors and/or producers would not notice to correct the simple mistakes.

Re: Graphics Misspellings
They've been doing copy pasta stealing/editing in local newsrooms since the internet was available. I was assigned a task of figuring out how to filter out HTML tags on the input to the graphics system. Seems a certain GM became highly annoyed when the breaking news banner contained <TITLE>Truck Fire Closes I-75</TITLE><IMG SRC=\"http://www.detnews.com...
So yeah, not surprising there are spelling errors.
