Juneteenth Thoughts
Re: Juneteenth Thoughts
Watch for the greeting card industry to exploit the hell out of this. Happy Teenth to my wife, my mother, my father, my teacher, my pastor, my dog - - -
I don't mean to brag, but I just put a puzzle together in 1 day and the box said 2-4 years.

For many people, New Year's Day keeps them from going to work hung over.jadednihilist wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 1:39 pmDo we really need to celebrate each time we complete an orbit around the sun around a random point?
It also used to be the day that the College Football season came to a thrilling climax, before the playoff system ruined that.

Another Hallmark holiday?

Re: Juneteenth Thoughts
They've got a five-year old girl in Detroit being crowned Miss Juneteenth because of her imitations of black women, including Angela Davis, a Marxist/Communist/Socialist who gave aid and comfort to the killers of a prison guard.
The whole idea of this gets more bizarre and sick the more I think about it. I checked the comments section of the story and it looks like the section was shut down after 3 comments.

Re: Juneteenth Thoughts
I think they should rethink this whole federal holiday process. It should be aligned with the regular world by just having federal holidays for the days that most people take off (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas). Those days give most people a break from the regular routine, which is a very mentally healthy thing.craig11152 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 12:23 pmIf they keep adding federal holidays without removing some eventually they will have 365 and Government works won't actually work.
That would eliminate MLK Day, President's Day, Juneteenth, Columbus Day, and Veteran's Day as paid holidays for federal workers. Those days cover a variety of interests and political views, so no one should feel singled out. Federal workers would instead get floating holidays like the rest of us.
With this system, we wouldn't have the government holidays that probably involve at least two total days of lower productivity, and cause a lot of taxpayer anger.
And we'd probably have a lot fewer arguments about the appropriateness of certain days, which would just become a new category of day, with special events by the government and anyone else who chooses to take the day off.
Re: Juneteenth Thoughts
There's that old Saturday Night Live skit where a black guy asks his white co-worker how he's going to spend Martin Luther King Day. The white guy says, "Oh, drink beer, shoot pool. What are you going to do?" The black guy talks about all the symposiums and speeches and marches that he's going to attend. The white guy replies, "Yeah, that would be a better way to spend the day" and walks out of the room with a serious look on his face.craig11152 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 1:29 pmI got 5 bucks says white liberals will embrace this holiday way more than most black people do. I'll put the number at 64% of black people and 99% of white liberals. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if those self flagellation whips go flying off the shelves wherever they sell them.
A black woman then walks into the room and asks the black guy how he's going to spend MLK Day, and he says, "Oh, drink beer, shoot pool."

Ask not what your country can do FOR you; ask what they are about to do TO YOU!!

Re: Juneteenth Thoughts
That's great. I think the point some on here are trying to make is, regardless of how passionate some will be about this holiday, how long do you personally feel this will remain a "formal and deep recognition of an important milestone"?.jadednihilist wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 1:39 pm... Juneteenth celebrates a core tenant of American values, freedom. Tragically, slavery continued for about two years after the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. We should be able to celebrate his milestone of freedom for all of our people while also being mindful of the shameful components of our history as well; just like we celebrate the sacrifices of our veterans while mourning their losses. July 4th commemorates our declaration of independence from Great Britain and the birth of American values; yet another milestone for freedom.
We may disagree on how we celebrate these holidays, but I fail to see a problem with the formal and deep recognition of these important milestones in our history ....
Or will it become what other holidays have become for most?
Another day to stay up a little too late the night before, and sleep in the next day.
According to the link below from WDIV, there are Juneteenth sales today in Detroit.
After a few years, will folks continue to look at Juneteenth as a day to celebrating a core tenet of American values.
Or will Juneteenth become a day to shop for good deals?
Like moving Dr. King's birthday into a three day weekend.
It's not as special anymore when it goes from celebrating the life of a great man into an excuse to take an extra day off.
Without looking it up, what day was Dr. King born on? Think about it.

Columbus Day celebrates a white man who helped invent slavery, we need to end this day as a Federal holiday.

Re: Juneteenth Thoughts
If Juneteenth is based on a legal definition, it should only be observed in states where slavery was legal at the time of the Emancipation Proclamation. Here is a U.S. map that shows where slavery was legal and illegal in 1860:
