Dam failures
Re: Dam failures
Why are you making jokes about this? I have some very close friends who may lose their homes. Seriously, get a life.
Re: Dam failures
I can’t believe that every station didn’t go wall to wall with coverage of the dam failures. Horrible call. This is a life threatening emergency and part of our duty as a TV station.
Re: Dam failures
This has the real potential to add up to the most expensive natural disaster in our state's history.
Instead of visiting Ford for political reasons, Trump should be visiting the Tittabawassee River catastrophe and getting FEMA there ASAP.
A 500-year event for Midland which will take decades to recover. The town of Sanford is probably gone for good. Unbelievable

Re: Dam failures
ABC World News Now is covering it, which is being carried by 7 and 12.

Re: Dam failures
Local TV gets a big fat "F" for its coverage -- or monumental lack of -- of the dam/bridge failures and evacuations last night. They break into programming to blubber on endlessly about tornado warnings and watches, but totally dropped the ball on this one. Pathetic.

7&4 led their news with this (and it's outside of their coverage area)SaginawSid wrote: ↑Wed May 20, 2020 9:29 amLocal TV gets a big fat "F" for its coverage -- or monumental lack of -- of the dam/bridge failures and evacuations last night. Re: Dam failures
Good Morning America led their broadcast this morning with coverage of the flooding. CNN did an extended piece too. 7 and 4, aren't they northern Michigan, like Traverse City area? Good for them, shame on TV 5, 12 and 25.

Re: Dam failures
Why am I not surprised by that?
The clips I saw on YouTube from 5 & 12 were indeed lame.
In terms of price tag, I doubt this will top the August 2014 Metro Detroit flood (hundreds of thousands suffered damages to their residences and GM Tech Center suffered several hundred million in damages by itself), but we shall see. Off the top of my head, I believe total damages from that event were $1.9 billion.

Yeah, I was confused by that remark by Whitmer, too. A couple feet? Sure. Widespread nine foot depths of standing water seems like a colossal stretch.
But hey, the alarmist claim of 9 feet brings in the network news crews and gives Whitmer more camera time.

Nine Feet Is A Biblical Flood. You might have 9 feet of water in a gully.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Wed May 20, 2020 1:51 pmYeah, I was confused by that remark by Whitmer, too. A couple feet? Sure. Widespread nine foot depths of standing water seems like a colossal stretch.

Re: Dam failures
Guessing the 9 feet of water thing was based on a total failure of Sanford dam which was reported as imminent. That one is still holding back at least some of Sanford Lake.
Re: Dam failures
The best coverage I have seen came from Channel 3 in Kalamazoo. They had a drone or helicopter. It was on the national CBS feed.
The Detroit stations were all over.

Re: Dam failures
Channel 3 is NBC 25's sister station, for what that's worth.
Did WWMT send its own reporter and crew, or were they simply re-airing 25's coverage?
Downtown Midland is too far downriver from Sanford to experience widespread 9 foot depths. Looks like lots of areas are submerged by two to four feet of water, which is terrible enough.
The fact Wixom Lake now looks like an empty bath tub is stunning.
Plenty of areas in and around Sanford certainly have 9 feet worth of standing flood water.
Very good coverage on the WDIV 5PM news today. First 12 minutes was all-Midland County coverage.

Re: Dam failures
AND, not one of those stupid fuckers at 5 know how to pronounce "Tittabawassee." C'mon, really? It is NOT Tib-ah-dah-wasee. But they say it that way. Every. Fucking. Time. I guess they better stick to one syllable words, like "Cher."
