Rented a U Haul van today. The guy wrote down the information from my drivers license, then asked for my phone number. I told him and then he asked for my cell phone number. I told him I don't have a cell phone. "You have to have one or I can't complete your application." I told him again I don't have one.
He got a pained look on his face but resumed typing. "Used my own number" he said.

I don't mean to brag, but I just put a puzzle together in 1 day and the box said 2-4 years.

One day I’ll be able to say “I knew a guy who didn’t have a cell phone”... then they’ll say “was he Amish?” And I’ll say “nah... just Canadian”..Turkeytop wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 11:13 pmRented a U Haul van today. I was reading that some retailers no longer accept cash. You have to pay using an app on your phone (whatever that means.)

I'm tempted to go offline as a point to the people that have surgically implanted cellphones. I accidentally left my phone at home a couple times and you know what happened? Nothing.

Re: Unconnected
The Tim Horton's kiosk in one of our local malls stopped accepting cash in favor of card-only transactions. Went to buy a coffee one day and saw a sign on the counter saying "no cash - credit/debit cards only". As I intended to pay cash for my cup o' java, I passed. It was the first time I had ever seen anything like it. A couple months later I was at the mall and noticed that the kiosk was out of business. I'm guessing they lost a good bit of revenue on that decision.
I've read since then that several municipalities have passed laws requiring businesses to take cash as legal tender for payment. Philadelphia was one of the first cities to pass such an ordinance. Given there are federal statutes designating cash as legal tender, I can see this becoming a Supreme Court case at some point if the trend continues.
Norway has announced plans to transition to a cashless economy, eliminating cash completely by 2030. Personally, I think basing any economy solely on a technological infrastructure that is subject to outages, hacks and cyber-terrorism is a disaster waiting to happen, and a dumb policy at best. Physical currency exists for a reason. It's material proof of our authority to barter, and it's not subject to technological vulnerability or manipulation. You can still pay cash if the power goes out or the server crashes.

I get the same thing when I go in for a haircut. Why do you need my number? "oh, so we can track you and know what services you'd like when you come back in". Sorry... I just make one up but I keep forgetting which one I made up so I have to make a new account each time.

Re: Unconnected
Admittedly I'm in the camp that doesn't have a landline phone. My cell is my primary phone. It was a financial decision my wife and I made years ago. We just didn't want to pay two phone bills, so we picked one and ditched the other.
Having our cells serve as our primary phones has definitely adapted our thinking. It's nice to have the option of readable communication, but it has also become somewhat of a crutch. There have been times when I've been broken down by the side of the road and was thankful that I had a phone to call for a tow. There are also times when I like to just go for a walk and pretend the thing's tethered to the wall.

Or you could dump your landline and get a cell, and enjoy the modern conveniences it provides. But that's right, you take great joy in making your life more difficult in order to prove some obscure point.Turkeytop wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 11:13 pmRented a U Haul van today. That point amounts to taking his ball and going home essentially.Graham Wellington wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 9:58 amOr you could dump your landline and get a cell, and enjoy the modern conveniences it provides. As I have read this thread, I ponder why Turkey just didn't say "Same number".Rate This wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 10:32 amThat point amounts to taking his ball and going home essentially.Graham Wellington wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 9:58 amOr you could dump your landline and get a cell, and enjoy the modern conveniences it provides. I never quite understanding getting all indignant when some place of business wants more info that they need.
Some place wants my phone number? I give one in a remote part of the plant that will never get answered.
Need my address? I give a house number that don't exist on a street near me.
(I've often pondered how much mail goes to that address).
Just make stuff up. It don't matter. All the questions are for just for marketing anyway.

Re: Unconnected
True. Most places don't care as long as you give them a working contact number. Makes no difference to them if the "home" and the "cell" are one in the same. I see a number of specialists, and have filled out my share of new patient forms. I put the same number down in the "home" and "cell" fields, as the cell is the only phone I have. Nobody's ever said anything about it, probably because a lot of people only have one phone these days. The fields are there for people who do have separate home and cell numbers and wish to provide those numbers. The only number I won't provide on a medical form is my SSN. I'll give the last four digits if someone specifically asks, but most of the time I just leave it blank and nobody says a word.

The Tampa Bay Rays have announced they will no longer be selling tickets for their games. Fans will have to pay for their admission through an app on their phone.
Ordinary folks will no longer be allowed to go to the ball game.
