SXM in Vehicle

Unread post by Turkeytop »

I've been considering trading in my 2020 Chevy Equinox for something new. My current vehicle is equipped with SXM. I only need the basic vehicle but I expected that, to get the satellite radio, I would have to upgrade to a higher priced package that would include a lot of fancy things I don't need. Things like oversized wheels, leather seats, sun roof, blue teeth connectivity (I don't even know what that means). But I'm having difficulty finding any vehicle that even offers satellite radio. Not even as an option.

Seriously? I thought GM vehicles had this standard on most models. What are you looking at buying??

Going forward most vehicles will simply connect with your phone, and SXM would be an app like Spotify. You will barely have radio as a media option.

TT is unique, and might need something like this...

I already have one of those units. I use it in the house. I don't want it cluttering up the dash in my car.

Aside from buying an aftermarket radio(which won't fit perfectly) you might not have many choices.

SXM is not longer a significant option in media and it's no longer worth it for manufacturers to have it onboard. My 2017 Honda doesn't have SXM.

My last three vehicles have been Equinox, a reliable but boring vehicle. One major reason why I bought them was that they were built locally. We had neighbours working at the plant.

But now, GM has moved production of the Equinox to Mexico. So I thought if I'm buying an import anyway, the list of choices was now much greater. I checked Mazda, Mitsubishi and Nissan. None of them have SXM available. This afternoon I checked the GM web site and it turns out SXM is standard equipment on the Equinox.

The problem now is that the local Chevy dealer doesn't have any normal Equinox. Theirs are all dressed up with expensive add-ons I don't need and am not willing to pay for. I don't need AWD. I don't need oversized wheels. I don't need leather seats. I don't need a sun roof. I don't need blue teeth connectivity. (I don't even know what it is) If they can't get me what I want, I'll visit other GM dealers to see if I can find one. I expect they're all the same. They want to up-sell the customer to expensive packages of bells and whistles.

The Rav 4 is built in Woodstock ON, just a few miles from here. I Rented a Rav 4 for for a day once. I thought it sounded tinny and noisy, compared to my Equinox. Also, the Toyota plant is non-Union, so I'm unlikely to buy their vehicle.

Anyway it looks like I'll likely be getting another Equinox. GM is the only Company old fashioned enough to be still using that quaint technology, satellite radio. I told the salesman at the Chevy dealer to find me one that isn't loaded up with high priced, fancy extras I don't need

I get the impression car companies do not wish to share their vehicle real estate with the tech companies Apple and Google anymore. Ford might also be taking a similar approach.

Not sure of the latest thinking, but It appears Ford is keeping android auto and Apple car play (from 2023)

um, GM just contracted with Google to build their entertainment system... that's not exactly ditching it.

It seems lke satellite radio is going the way of AM stereo. The Automakers aren't putting in vehicles. It's only a matter of time until SXM stops broadcasting via satellite and makes it a streaming service.

They have to manage the blinking lights in the sky... They also continue to build new ones.

SXM has a great product, but as is the case with everything media, distribution models are changing. Running both streaming and satellites costs more that Apple, Amazon, Pandora, Spotify which are all providing services for less operational costs. It would be a shame to lost all the great talent, but SXM seems like they aren't growing users like the other services.

When they abandon satellite broadcasting they'll lose a lot of loyal customers. I've been with them almost 20 years.

When they lost proprietary position in vehicles, they will also lose customers.

At some point SXM will be bought by a VC who will destroy them.
