Emmy winners
Emmy winners
Congrats to WNEM’s David Custer and Michelle Galerno for winning a total of 3 Emmy Awards last night.
25-66 and 12 were shut out.
An honorary Emmy for most awkward presenter has to go to Hannah Jewel for awkward banter with Kiertzner and the onstage make out session with her husband. She should never be allowed to present again.
And if you want to know why Bally Sports is in financial ruin, look no further than the tens of thousands of dollars they spent on Emmy entries.
the Lions, Pistons, Red Wings, and Tigers — along with public universities like MSU, UM, and CMU — using funds to buy their way into this awards ceremony only to pass costs on to you on the form of high ticket prices and high tuition costs is outrageous.
What a waste of time and money is the NATAS Michigan chapter.
And the Emmy for stupidest theme… Mardi Gras
It was embarrassing the amount of “winners” who couldn’t be bothered to show up to the awards ceremony.
There used to be a time when the Emmy Awards used to be a big deal. Now it’s just a money grab by NATAS with its 800 categories. Stacia needs to be fired and the Michigan chapter board needs to be replaced.

Re: Emmy winners
U-M's public media is not funded with general fund money, so no tuition dollars were spent on this. I'm sure the funding structure is similar in EL and MP.sinklair wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 6:20 amCongrats to WNEM’s David Custer and Michelle Galerno for winning a total of 3 Emmy Awards last night.

Re: Emmy winners
It's almost like pay your membership fees and get an Emmy. So many people win all these Emmys and still can't get out of a small market.
Re: Emmy winners
I’m not just talking about the PBS stations (which do have a separate funding source) but also have “contributors” whose salary and time are paid not by the PBS station, but by the university. However, I’m not sure PBS donors would continue to donate knowing significant station funding was going to expensive Emmy award entry fees and tickets to the ceremony.
There are also other university related and public entities that use taxpayer funding and/or time to participate in the Emmy Awards:
Michigan Medicine
Great Lakes Water Authority
City of Holland
Detroit Public TV
Detroit Media Services
University of Michigan Athletics
Michigan State University Athletics
University of Michigan College of Engineering
Michigan State University College of Music
Veterans Health Administration
University of Michigan Center for Academic Innovation
University of Michigan - Michigan News
It’s also embarrassing when an awards ceremony has misspellings like “Judging Proceedures” (page 5). I guess the NATAS-Michigan Chapter will need to raise entry fees to hire a proof-reader next year.
https://natasmichigan.org/files/2023/06 ... rogram.pdf
NATAS should not be profiting off of publicly funded entities like universities and government agencies. This is a conflict of interest caused by the Emmy board itself.
Might be a good topic for a local investigative reporter… oh yeah, we don’t have those in Flint anymore. Plus they’d probably be afraid of a hard-hitting investigation and being blackballed from next year’s awards ceremony.
But what would you expect when the Emmy Awards committee is run by people like Barb Roethler, Neille Giffune, Carlota Lumpkin, Shiela Grant and Sharon McClendon — all who are not active journalists? Or how NATAS’s Michigan Chapter is run by PR flack Robin Tracy. I guess those who no longer can do real journalism instead run awards ceremonies? It might be better run by someone actually practicing real journalism…
And with all the categories available, it’s no wonder why local Emmy Awards have lost their prestige/mean nothing.

Re: Emmy winners
So the State of Michigan pays UofM, (who's endowment is greater than the State's budget), $300 million dollars each year?
Why isn't any money going to The Trump's School of Lawncare?
Scam, disgrace, total slush fund.

I can provide links to random websites just like Matt that have nothing to do with the topic at hand:

The fact remains that NATAS is profiting off public worker time and money.

Re: Emmy winners
As per usual, wrong: https://record.umich.edu/articles/unive ... -in-fy-22/

Oh, btw, anyone who rails against an endowed value is either disingenuous or a blithering moron:
https://publicaffairs.vpcomm.umich.edu/ ... endowment/Q. What are endowment funds?
The university’s endowment is essential to sustaining academic excellence because it provides a guaranteed, never-ending source of income to support student scholarships, professorships, innovative programs, learning opportunities and life-saving research. Donors who contribute to the endowment do so because they want to support the university and positively impact U-M students and academic programs 25, 50 or 100 years from now.
The university’s endowment funds consist of both true endowments and quasi-endowments, also known as “funds functioning as endowments.” U-M’s true endowments are permanent endowment funds received from donors with the stipulation that the principal remain untouched and that it be invested to produce a never-ending source of support for the purposes specified by the donors. Quasi-endowments are funds reserved by the university on a permanent or long-term basis for specific programs or projects critical to the mission, financial health and growth of the university.
I've countered your statements on U-M and pointed out they were factually incorrect.sinklair wrote: ↑Mon Jun 19, 2023 9:37 pmI can provide links to random websites just like Matt that have nothing to do with the topic at hand:

Re: Emmy winners
Matt, you’ve countered absolutely nothing. Show me where in black and white the UM university endowment pays for Emmy entries, banquet tickets, time to produce award entries, and duplicate statuette costs? It doesn’t.
I then show you the following operating budgets for universities paid for by taxpayers… which continue to rise year after year, while paying for broadcasting awards.
https://www.senate.michigan.gov/sfa/dep ... ed_web.pdf
And I’m sure you have endowments that are also paying for the other governmental agencies to “win” Emmy awards? Of course you don’t.
Great Lakes Water Authority
City of Holland
Detroit Public TV
Detroit Media Services
Veterans Health Administration
Most local broadcast station pay for our own Emmy entries… should be the same for universities, governmental bodies, etc. And if you’re organization has filed for bankruptcy protection (I’m looking at you Bally Sports, they definitely shouldn’t be flooding the awards with entries.)

You want to be on the Michigan Chapter Emmy Board Sinklair LOL .
Go Pistons, Let's Go Redwings.
Re: Emmy winners
Unlike our former In Over Her Head News Director, I actually think you should be in broadcast journalism in order to serve on NATAS’s board.

Guess 25-66 didn’t have it in the budget to buy themselves more Emmy’s.sinklair wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 6:20 amCongrats to WNEM’s David Custer and Michelle Galerno for winning a total of 3 Emmy Awards last night.
