Urbandale man arrested for alleged pot shots at passerby

An Urbandale man was arrested late Wednesday after allegedly firing a hand gun at passing motorist from his apartment balcony.

Ruben Reyes Munoz Jr., 30, 4410 142nd St., #303 Urbandale, was charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon-injure/provoke fear/anger.

The incident began about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 4400 block of 142nd Street in Urbandale, where officers of the Urbandale Police Department responded to a report of shots fired.

The victim told the officers that he entered the apartment complex in a yellow Dodge Challenger and soon heard Munoz “shouting at him from a third-floor balcony,” according to court records.

The victim said he told Munoz that he didn’t want a fight but if Munoz “wanted to keep shouting, he should ‘come down here and settle this like men.'”

According to the victim, Munoz “then said, ‘I don’t need to come outside. I’ll handle this right now,’ and produced a handgun and shot two rounds at the victim.”

The victim left the scene and reported the incident to the Urbandale Police Department, whose officers responded and made contact with Munoz, who “matched the description given by the victim.”

Munoz and his “wife both stated they had heard no confrontation, shouting or gunshots,” according to court records. Munoz said that he “he keeps a pistol in a safe in his bedroom unloaded, but also advised that the safe is not locked when he is home.”

The firearm was located, and “shell casings were discovered in the snow directly beneath” Munoz’s apartment that were “consistent with having been discharged from” Munoz’s balcony, according to court records.

Munoz was immediately detained and advised of his Miranda rights, and he stated he did not wish to speak with officers. As he was being assisted to the patrol vehicle, he allegedly spontaneously made the statement: “I was just trying to protect my family, man. It was that yellow Challenger. Is that who you’re talking to?” according to court records.

Munoz was held in the Dallas County Jail on a $10,000 cash or surety bond in advance of a hearing in Dallas County District Court.
