For years the University of Michigan and others have toyed with the idea of privatization. Some claimed the university costs the state hundreds of millions of dollars, yet UofM's assets and reserves exceed the State government's.
Could this create an opportunity for the University to go private and get out from some of the restrictions the conservative legislature is trying to place on them?
The state is about to enter a serious financial crisis and is looking for cash, the University is going to lose some money but will be fine throughout this emergency.

Good timing for UofM to privatize?

This is a non-starter. Not going to happen. The legislature hasn't placed restrictions on the university, the governor hasn't even. The actions that UM have taken have been voluntary.TC Talks wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2020 10:34 amFor years the University of Michigan and others have toyed with the idea of privatization. I’ve thought for a long time that Hillsdale should buy Oberlin College and overhaul it from top to bottom. Since they are private, make the professors and administrators take a loyalty oath to uphold God and the Constitution.

The fact U-M is a publicly supported institution that can offer lower tuition rates than private schools of lesser stature (and far lesser name recognition) to State of Michigan residents is a great thing.
University of Wisconsin is public. University of Minnesota is public. University of Texas is public. University of Illinois is public. All have main campuses with great academic reputations.
