Out of habit, when I saw "Eric Pate", I instinctively reached in the air to turn the dial. Some habits never die.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Thu Jul 16, 2020 3:03 pmI agree that is indeed ridiculous, but Beard shouldn't be hired simply to fill a racial quota.
I mean, seriously, *he* is the best Entercom can do?!?! My guess is Entercom "got what they paid for."
Every African American who has ever done sports radio in this market has ranged from mediocre to terrible in terms of "takes." Terry Foster was probably the least objectionable of a very bad lot. Worst? Tough question, but I'll go with Eric Pate.
Would be great if a strong African American sports radio professional from a top 20 market not named Detroit could be hired to work here.

The only full time black sports radio hosts I can remember are Mega Man, Rob Parker, Eric Pate, Terry Foster, Drew Sharp, Damon Perry, and I think that’s it. I have to be forgetting someone.

Was Clarence Black full time or just on weekends? Other than that I think you are rightwtfdetroit wrote: ↑Thu Jul 16, 2020 11:41 pmThe only full time black sports radio hosts I can remember are Mega Man, Rob Parker, Eric Pate, Terry Foster, Drew Sharp, Damon Perry, and I think that’s it. Why not give Tony Ortiz a shot at being a host/co-host? I don't know how well Ortiz would pair up with Valenti given his softer, less aggressive personality. That said, Ortiz is certainly better than some of the dopes currently on the station and in the past. You're telling me Ortiz would be worse than Dan Leach, Dennis Fithan, Pat Caputo, Scott Anderson, or Brian Chapman?

Damon Perry was alright. His on air shtick was cheesy, but seemed like a decent guy with reasonably formulated takes. I had forgotten about him!
Clarence Black (weekender at DFN) stunk.
Ortiz was a gigantic Matt Millen apologist; he's a buffoon.

DTE Energy paid $752 million in dividends to its shareholders last fiscal year. Remember that the next time they ask the MPSC to approve rate hikes.

That's pretty sad, he isn't even that old.
I remember Mega had the night show on WDFN and then I believe he got fired but moved over to WXYT and did an evening show there and I believe his producer was Scott "The Gator" Anderson. He also did a stint on tv where he was a sportscaster for WXYZ part time and then he just disappeared. I remember he got busted for prostitution soon after that in Indiana because he was on the local news here. He had an internet radio show about 7-8 years ago and listened to an episode and he went off the deep end. He became militant about racism and talked about weed a lot, nothing like his WDFN days where it was "family" content.

Wow, thanks for sharing that krupper. Your right wtf, he can't be that old. I remember listening to him, he seemed like he was always pretty positive. That's too bad.
Re: The "New" Mike Valenti Show on 97.1
When Griffin joined WXYT in the mid-1990s, he received an on-air welcome from the conservative talk show host Mark Scott, whose interest in sports was almost non-existent. Scott tried to focus on Griffin's personality and work ethic in what was a well-intentioned, but awkward, interview.Mr.Transistor wrote: ↑Fri Jul 17, 2020 10:41 amAnybody else remember Ike "Megaman" Griffin? All along the icy wastes, there are faces smiling in the gloom.
Re: The "New" Mike Valenti Show on 97.1
Ike was involved in a heated facebook back and forth with Larry Sorenson a few years back. Spewed anti gay hatred and slurs. It was really bad. He really seems like an asshole.
He was on the podcast just before his stroke.
