It's all relative. When WCSX launched in 1987, classic rock seemed to mean the late 70s playlists of FM rock stations plus a few other acts. The more traditional rock stations at the time were probably playing more of the hair metal bands of the 1980s, like Twisted Sister. Kind of like the term oldies, which for years seemed to mean 1950s and 1960s, then 1960s and early 1970s. I don't think the term is even used anymore except for a few AM stations.
