How about talk with the person who made the error — as opposed to putting them in a nasty-gram email.
Maybe make sure there are multiple people that check all graphics prior to broadcast — like the producer, executive producer, and director.
These are pretty basic systems that work at most every TV station… without the news Director resorting to calling out their staff.

That's my thought. With technology and things like spell check, it should happen even less than it has in the past.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sun Mar 31, 2024 7:55 amMaybe that's already occurring, yet the sloppy errors are still making it to air?Maybe make sure there are multiple people that check all graphics prior to broadcast — like the producer, executive producer, and director.

In my opinion the ND showed class in first addressing the problem with a "velvet hammer". Hope it's enough make his point. Lots of hands touch the on-air product and it should be a communal effort to get it the best it can be. The one employee who gets off by embarrassing his/her workplace needs therapy. I suspect his/her home life isn't pleasant.

Agreed! Good for him taking a stand like this and requiring high standards for such a high-visibility job. If you can't spell correctly and use proper grammar and punctuation, sorry you don't belong in the news or journalism industry.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2024 2:23 pm I agree with you, Graham. I think it's great he is taking people to task for sloppiness.

They may now be spelling better but instead they are using the wrong lower thirds graphics for stories. The other night they had a story on tryouts for the US Olympic team. The video was of track and field, the lower third talked about swimming.

Spell/grammar checkers should be used as a tool. All high school graduates should have full command of the English language without relying on editing aids to think for them, especially those who write to earn a living.

It seems generational as the younger ones seem to do it..are they lazy or are they tongue tied?
