“Hard”-ly Hitting Journalism

Unread post by sinklair »

WNEM posted this question on its station Facebook page:
“ Which food did you hate as a child but love eating now?”

Why is this news? Even better question: why would anyone bother to respond?

Stop with the click bait (all 3 stations do this crap). Just post the damn news.

From Mid-Michigan Not NOW! this morning:

From ABC12:

“ What goes best with tortilla chips?
A. Salsa
B. Nacho cheese
C. Guacamole
D. Something else”

It is audience engagement.

Exactly. Many stations do this. 7&4 started doing it over 20 years ago on the morning show. I think 9&10 has been doing it longer than that.

It’s actually not audience engagement. There is no commenting from the station on their responses.

It’s pure click bait.

And it has absolutely nothing to do with any story they are pursuing.

How about just keeping posts to actual news.

Maybe stop with the celebrity birthday posts as well.

If you look at what people like, comment, share, click thru (you know the audience engagement rate algorithm that determines post reach) these click bait posts don’t actually do very well compared to an actual local news story that is interesting or affects real people.

I'm surprised that FTVLive hasn't gone after 25-66, TV5, TV12 for the click bait I know Scott exposes it from time to time he should take the Flint TV stations to task.

Woah, woah, woah…

Watch it Realist and MasterB! How dare you provide an alternative point of view that doesn’t align with Matt? You should be shouted down and called childish names!

But, alas, you are 100% right. This crap posing as “news” is simply the lazy man’s way of trying to build its social audience. But viewers catch on and these strategies end up doing very little to increase audience engagement. The correct approach would be to find real news, but I guess that’s too hard for local stations to do these days.
