More News on TV5

Unread post by AuburnViewer »

As seen on Facebook: EXCITING NEWS! TV5 is launching a one-hour newscast at 4 p.m. on Sept. 12! It will be anchored by our very own Colette Boyd. Starting that week, you can watch Colette at noon and 4 p.m. We hope you'll tune in!

1 - trying to compete with ABC12 in that same time slot for news
2 - saving some money versus buying a syndicated show to air

I think 5 wants to take advantage of the dumpster fire that ABC 12 news has become.

There's no competition now that jiggle chin slow talker jr kirtek is doing it. Losing Brad was a big loss for that station. He is unwatchable. We watch Chris now.

I think that running a 4pm is a mistake for WNEM. There’s only so much news in the Flint and Saginaw area. WJRT’s experience shows us that adding the 4pm diluted it’s other shows — both in quality and in content distribution.

I’m sure Ken the GM is looking at syndication cost savings and owning 100% of the revenue in longer local breaks, especially as we near an election cycle. But I really don’t see the ratings reasoning for a 4pm newscast.

Wondering if they’ll pair Colette with a meteorologist or if this will be just a lifestyle show.

I agree with Sinkliar that WNEM doesn't need a 4PM newscast as nothing really ever happens in Flint & Thumb area since it isn't a big market. I think Wood TV will add a 4PM newscast they haven't said anything since Ellen ending and the next 3 weeks. WXMI Fox17 is the only one that does a 4PM newscast in West Michigan since 2014, I'm not going to be surprised if Wood TV goes with 4PM news on Sep 12 I'll eat crow if it doesn't happen. WWMT will not do 4PM until know it all Dr. Phil's talker ever ends Kazoo & BC nothing happens and would just dilute the coverage. Some in Kazoo get off my lawn when WWMT covers GR in their mind and let Wood TV, WXMI Fox17 & WZZM cover the GR area. Fox17 & Wood TV do cover Kazoo BC not so much.

Does anyone know if 5 is adding staff for the new 4pm newscast or just having its current staff do more? It appears as if they are hiring… but I’m not sure if that’s additional bodies or just replacing staff that has recently left.

Also, what does moving Colette off the morning show indicate? They are positioning it as a positive move. But with the money 5 makes in the morning, I think moving Collette to noon and 4pm is a demotion.

Saving money is the only reason 5 is adding a 4pm newscast. 12 didn't add a 4 so they would look good. They added it because of the bottom line.
It's all about money. 12 would rather twist in the wind than do anything that would cost money like hiring people or try to keep good people. They have proved that time and time again. When everybody left 12 it was over money and respect.
They got what they deserve.
It's only a matter of time before that kind of mentality catches up with 5. I've never talked to a 5 employee that had anything good to say about the place.

The idea of an additional newscast went over like a fart in church at 5. More work with no incentive.

I don’t think you quite understand what the staffing levels are at these stations.
