HR Departments
HR Departments
HR departments are absolutely useless at TV stations. Why do they even exist if they can’t create a culture where good people want to stay? 25-66 continues to see very good employees exit. There is a very real business cost when you spend a lot of time training only to have them walk out the door at the very first opportunity. Then we spend weeks trying to find basically any warm body who will take a job that pays less than the McDonalds down the street.
When you bring it up to HR or your department head or the hand-picked Sinclair GM, all you get are shrugs. I’ve been told to my face that people don’t leave because of money (which is laughable since we make considerably less than our colleagues at 5 or 12). They say good people leave because of bad managers. I agree with that… and it’s time for 25-66’s management to start looking in the mirror.
I’d start with the HR Manager who is more fixated on following Sinclair’s rule book than actually creating a station culture built on respect and recognizing good work. But sure, let’s all remember the “good ole days” when instead of pay raises, we got cold grilled cheese sandwiches and lukewarm tomato soup served up by the former GM/egomaniac.
To those that are leaving, we will miss you. You make this place bearable to work at. Good luck at your new station.
To your replacement: welcome to hell. You’ll have a lot of horror stories about incompetent management to tell when you leave in less than two years. Start looking for your next job immediately.

Re: HR Departments
Good point about the department being useless. A good example is about the HR Department that did nothing for when David Custer demeaned his co-worker into looking like a prostitute in the Pretty Woman poster. Pretty sure that nothing happened behind the scenes at all.
turn up the radio! mighty in might!

Re: HR Departments
HR departments are not responsible for building culture. They are responsible for protecting an entity.

Re: HR Departments
Matt: wrong.
HR Departments are here to improve the company’s overall bottom line by making sure employees are successful. It’s a concept clearly foreign to Sinclair and 25-66.

Re: HR Departments
HR departments should prioritize figuring out effective (and legal) ways of working out deadwood and subversive elements out of the company and help guide management to doing so. THAT would probably improve morale and performance across the board!!
But was he telling the truth?? If so, how could that be demeaning if that was the look she was going for? She probably should have considered it a compliment!smallwonder wrote: ↑Fri Oct 15, 2021 3:46 pm .....David Custer demeaned his co-worker into looking like a prostitute in the Pretty Woman poster. Re: HR Departments
Leadership sets culture. HR sets policy and handles employee relations but ultimately is in place to protect an organization.

Re: HR Departments
Looking for another job in TV going to West Michigan Sinklair wanting to work for Wood TV, WXMI Fox17, or WZZM you couldn't go to WWMT since that is a Sinclair TV station which is better run than 25-66. I wonder if Gray will fire David Custer come the new year since I doubt Gray isn't going put up with pimping out his business with the hubby and pals Meredith is only giving everyone half-pay one more big FU to the staff before going out the door when they have money why not give them bonuses for the hard work they have put in.
Go Pistons, Let's Go Redwings.
Re: HR Departments
Matt: the HR Manager is part of the leadership team and is very much in charge of station culture discussions. It’s just that she’s not very good at her job and isn’t trusted by anyone on the staff.
MasterB: WWMT is a train wreck as well, led by an equally incompetent GM and News Director. The only thing they have going for it is they basically carved out all ratings and revenue in the Kalamazoo end of the market. We’ve had several people jump from 25-66 to news channel 3 only to leave as soon as their contracts ended.

Maybe he can keep it real like other news anchors in the area and promote his own newsletter.
Re: HR Departments
Custer brings in ratings, thus revenue. I don’t know why viewers tune in to watch him. But until someone knocks 5 off the top, don’t expect a GM with a sales background to fire Custer.
