4 Country Stations in Detroit-Windsor
Re: 4 Country Stations in Detroit-Windsor
Give us 89X back and River 93.9 or classic CKLW on that frequency and maybe we would listen....
At this point .... what’s there is useless

While not in the market, still a pretty good daytime signal coming our way.Steve79 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 05, 2021 11:35 amI don't see Blackburn trying the soft AC again.... they seem very cookie cutter with their formats in every marked, HOT AC/ROCK/COUNTRY.
If they were smart they'd tweak CHYR (mix 96.7) to incorporate some "office friendly" music. sprinkle in some 70's, 80's, 90's Adult Contemporary music.... the perfect mix at work Mix 96.7.
95.9 will stay country.
93.1 WDRQ however I'd keep an eye on them to change. Not sure to what but they seem like the only possible candidate.

CFCO is an institution, part of the community.
I Would describe CFCO not as Country, but rather, as Farm.
A full-service station with weather, commodity prices, agrarian issues, obituaries, news, and weather.
Add to that, it has very wide signal coverage.
Sadly, I miss the "old" CFCO, that had a format that was about 1/3 country and 2/3 AC.
Re: 4 Country Stations in Detroit-Windsor
Farm country..... makes some sense.
CHYR-am was like that too but they’ve been FM so long that it’s hard to say what is “preferred” in that area of SouthWest Ontario now.
I’m a fan of almost all musical tastes.... but yeah four county stations in the area is a bit much.

WSDS AM-1480 used to be country as well.

Re: 4 Country Stations in Detroit-Windsor
Add in not only CFCO but also CHOK which gets a good signal over much of metro Detroit, and that's SIX stations all playing essentially the same music, and not one trying to offer anything different. (SEVEN if you include 92.7 CJSP.) I thought CHOK might be a bit more listenable when they switched back to country and had a 50/50 mix of currents and classics, but they seem to be playing just as much hick-hop and tractor rap as everyone else now.
CFCO and CHOK's sister station in Wingham, 920 CKNX, has a similar full-service approach, but their music is all classic country. I believe CKNX was one of the first stations in Canada to play country music.
Many small town stations in the '60s were dayparted between MOR (AC), Country and Top 40. CFCO I believe was one of those block-programmed stations, as was CHYR's predecessor CJSP (the original on 710 AM). According to Billboard, WBRB-FM 102.7 programmed C&W part-time around 1966; 1340 WEXL and 1480 WYSI/WSDS were the only full-time country stations in the area until WJBK became WDEE in late 1969-early '70.
WSDS actually outlasted two other Washtenaw County competitors in the country format - 1290 WNRS ('70s) and 1050 WPAG (mid '80s). 1520 (forerunner of 990 WWCM/WDEO) may also have played some country when it was WYNZ in the '60s, but I'm not certain (they switched to religious programming in 1968 and have been various form of Christian radio ever since).

Ugh no. 96.7 is my favourite station.

I agree that WDRQ is the most likely candidate for a change if we're speaking the next 12 to 18 months.
Long term, I cannot see Windsor supporting two country stations. Might be two or three years before we see a flip there.

AFAIK, neither WSDS nor WDTW (AM) is subscribing to Nielsen.
I'd be curious to know how many listening hours have shifted from WSDS to WDTW.
Re: 4 Country Stations in Detroit-Windsor
It’s probably close between the two stations. The coverage areas are slightly different and 1310 is probably larger in coverage due to the 107.9 translator, that signal is good in Southwest Detroit .innate-in-you wrote: ↑Fri Mar 12, 2021 8:09 amAFAIK, neither WSDS nor WDTW (AM) is subscribing to Nielsen.

I suspect WDTW is dominant. By far the stronger signal in SW Detroit and in Pontiac.

Re: 4 Country Stations in Detroit-Windsor
The signal for 106.7 bites from telegraph across to beech Daly and from about 8-1/2 down to about I-96
Makes it impossible to listen to mostly.

That comes as a surprise; their signal should be scorching in that neck of the woods.
I've encountered no reception issues in my stomping grounds in a while.

Last Detroit radio ratings had WYCD as #11 in the market. Why three other stations thought that county would be a ratings winner does baffle me. You would of got more ratings simulcasting some of these AM stations like WWWJ or WJR on FM.

Goddammit, we need a FIFTH station in the area. Beasley? Wanna switch 1051 or 1059 to country? iHeart? Maybe take a stab with 1067 again? If five ain't cuttin' it, fuck it, make it six! Entercom can make 987 country and own that section of the dial!

Cumulus and Bell at least don't care about ratings. They just care about clearance for their corporate brands and/or programming. The cheaper they can run it, the better.windsorjoe wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 9:44 pmLast Detroit radio ratings had WYCD as #11 in the market.
