He Was Against It, Before He Was For It

All of a sudden Biden thinks travel bans are a good idea.
President Joe Biden signed restrictions Monday on travel to the United States to mitigate Covid-19 transmission.

The ban prevents most non-U.S. citizens from entry if they have recently been in South Africa, where a new strain of Covid-19 has been identified.

The limits affect non-U.S. citizens traveling from the United Kingdom, Ireland and much of Europe in what is known as the Schengen countries, which share a common visa process. Travelers from Brazil would also be affected.
Presidential Candidate Joe Biden said of Trump's travel bans...
Feb 1, 2020
“We are in the midst of a crisis with the coronavirus. We need to lead the way with science — not Donald Trump’s record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering. He is the worst possible person to lead our country through a global health emergency.”
March 12, 2020
“A wall will not stop the coronavirus. Banning all travel from Europe — or any other part of the world — will not stop it. This disease could impact every nation and any person on the planet — and we need a plan to combat it.”
March 18, 2020
“Stop the xenophobic fear-mongering. Be honest. Take responsibility. Do your job.”
So evidently "xenophobic fear-mongering" is NOW the prudent thing to do since he's become president? Wondering if he's considering new border wall construction too?
New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.

Congress constructed an "impenetrable" fence (wall) around the Capitol in just a week. Why couldn't they have come up with the concept years ago to protect the southern border, and Trump would have never had a case for his campaign.

Because of the the geogra... oh never mind the reasons a wall on the southern border is not a realistic construction project for its entire length are way too high concept to explain to you. It’s really really obvious why a wall wouldn’t work.

When the US is already the world epicenter for the pandemic, what does he hope to accomplish with a travel ban?

Bryce,

Are you complaining that the President has adopted policies you like without any dog whistles or inciting Proud Boys?
For Kristian Trumpers are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.

Just pointing out that even though the "Orange Man Bad" and "Uncle Joe Good" mantra is hypocritical.

I am glad however, that although good old Uncle Joe doesn't have the ability for original thought, he does have the hubris to adopt Trump policy and claim them as his own.

Quotes 1 and 3 don't directly address travel bans, but Trump's insistence on calling COVID-19 the "Chinese Virus," in spite of the science and journalistic community shifting from the "Wuhan virus," when COVID primarily impacted Wuhan to COVID/coronavirus. Trump has a long history of playing up racialized stereotypes to fire up his base, so it's not out of line to assume that was his motivation for the language here.

Quote 2 didn't age well. However, to Biden's credit, Trump's COVID strategy, including travel bans were ineffective, and by any metric, a colossal failure. A stronger, more comprehensive response early on, including potential travel bans, could have really reduced the impact on our country. I firmly believe that if Trump handled COVID more seriously, he could have easily won re-election.

I will reserve judgment on Biden's response to COVID as President until this summer, based off his administration's timeline for vaccinations and how well he responds to suppressing the spread of the more aggressive variants popping up in the UK, South Africa, and Brazil.
I'm here for a good, hearty debate, to agree and disagree respectfully, and commiserate on the current state of terrestrial radio.

So you like the message but don't like the messenger. Got it, just a shallow complaint.

Oh good another idiot who doesn't believe in covid.

You got it, we are a free economy and just because you don't like someone it doesn't mean the country does.

You are Wrong TC. I just believe that we are going too far with the pandemic. Some of this is getting to the point of 'irrational panic'.
