WMMI 830/92.3 Drops Talk, Now Stunting
It's being reported they've been stunting with blocks of various musical genres including hair bands and smooth jazz. Their Facebook page is teasing a new format to debut 01/04 at 6am.

Dumping News/Talk makes little sense, unless the programming is moving elsewhere - i.e. to 104.3.
I cannot help but wonder if the News/Talk format will return this coming week, simply under a new station brand?
Assuming the change moves forward, I guess Limbaugh fans will have to tune into a fuzzy 760 WJR or 790 WSGW (I noticed that 790 & 100.5 are now airing the same program schedule - when did that change occur?) to catch his program.
For a translator, 92.3 has an impressive signal. Comes in quite well along the US-10 corridor from Evart to Sanford.

I wasn't aware of this myself - but it happened recently. The most recent entry in the web archive for their schedule is in late October and they were still on split programming as of then.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 7:36 amI noticed that 790 & 100.5 are now airing the same program schedule - when did that change occur?
Shows how often I ever check in to either station - I wasn't even aware that 100.5 had dropped its Fox Sports overnight affiliation, apparently over a year ago.

It's been a little over 2 weeks since they started running the same afternoon shows on both AM & FM. The morning AM has been on the FM since late 2020.bmw wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 1:12 pmI wasn't aware of this myself - but it happened recently. I've also noticed that they've dropped Fox news on the FM and run CBS on both at the top of the hour now.

Classic Country is going to be the new format according to insiders. Ha!

Somewhat surprising choice given the signal overlap with WGDN-FM, if true.
Of course, that format does have different flavors, so perhaps there wouldn't be very much in the way of song overlap. Tough to say.

100.5 seems to have been a format black hole for years now. It's almost like it's jinxed. It's hard to see the point of running an FM simulcast to 790 AM. Can anyone enlighten me as to how this helps them?bmw wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 1:12 pmI wasn't aware of this myself - but it happened recently. Sure. AM radio's audience is dying (literally). On top of that, many tabletop radios no longer offer an AM tuner, and within the next 10 years, I suspect few newly manufactured cars will feature AM reception.
I disagree about 100.5 being "jinxed." Sure, as a music station following the idiotic dumping of CHR music (the inaugural run, not the half-assed cameo of 100.5 The Fox that occurred several years later), the frequency was jinxed.
However, as FM Talk 100.5 and more recently as WSGW-FM, the station has earned respectable numbers. Usually around a 4 share. Of course, News/Talk stations in many instances were beneficiaries of increased listening in 2020. In the spring 2020 book, FM 100.5 actually sported a formidable 5.0 share. The Tri-Cities are a two book per year market, so I believe that 5.0 share is actually an average of the most recent survey and the prior one. If the spring 2020 survey were viewed in isolation, the actual share might be even higher.
By simulcasting full time, the two stations will no longer cannibalize one another and programming costs are eliminated. On top of the above, 790 WSGW has some problematic signal nulls after dark.

If going to a music format, I hope they will return to AM stereo. When they were oldies, I could get them in well in the St. Johns area in full stereo.BayCityJohn2337 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 6:57 pmClassic Country is going to be the new format according to insiders. Ha!

Is it Classic Country as was predicted? I'm not within listening range at the moment.
The rationale may be to have a country station that super-serves Mount Pleasant. Although WGDN-FM and "Real Country" 1520 WMLM both have good signals into Mount Pleasant (WMLM also has a translator at 105.9 which probably doesn't reach Mount Pleasant very well), Isabella County hasn't had a country station of its own since 94.5 WCEN became a Saginaw station. Also, it's a format that could appeal to many of the conservative talk listeners.
And a glut of classic country signals is better than a glut of stations playing hick-hop like we have in Detroit/Windsor.
