Scanners
Re: Scanners
Unfortunately, the cellphone companies gave LMR money to move their frequencies around, so the PRO-96 frequency "look up table" doesn't work with digital trunking in the 700 range for the most part, and have to step up to the PRO-106. Control channel will still list the talkgroup number, but not track it.
Re: Scanners
A big Air Show in town this weekend. Mostly aircraft from USAF. There was a lot of activity on the military air band.

Re: Scanners
I have the PRO 96, and it doesn't pickup much. In order to hear a lot of the police and fire, you have to get the home patrol scanners which are $300.
If you only want to hear the ham radio operators, you can easily get a used scanner from eBay for Amazon for.$55

They/them, non-binary and proud.
Remember that “2000 Mules” was concocted by a circus of elephants.
The right needs to stop worry about what’s between people’s legs. Instead, they should focus on what’s between their ears.
Audacity sucks.

Re: Scanners
The PRO-96 used to be able to receive most digital P25 trunking, but when the cell phone companies paid to have the public safety frequencies rebanded, it eliminated the pro 96 being able to receive the new 700 megahertz frequencies
Re: Scanners
Been retired from two way radio for only 8 years and I totally am lost in the new spectrum allocations
Re: Scanners
I knew they used 470-512 in Chicago for a while but 700 MHz in really new to me.
Re: Scanners
As I'm sure you're already aware, the cops and firefighters are almost all up on 800 Mhz nowadays.MotorCityRadioFreak wrote: ↑Fri Sep 25, 2020 9:04 pm I have the PRO 96, and it doesn't pickup much. If that's all you're interested in, give some thought to buying an antenna just for 800 for your Pro-96.
You will receive 800 a whole lot better than the stock antenna that came with the radio.
The only caveat with going that route is the VHF and UHF will be attenuated compared to the stock antenna.
Here's one of many that will work with your 96:

Re: Scanners
Do you have a lot of voice traffic on 700 around here? Up around me, there are starting to be 700 allocations.
But I believe it's data. MDT's, video from the cars, that sort of thing.
Maybe I should explain what video from the cars is. It used to be the cops around me had vcr's in the trunk, and they would swap out tapes. Now a days, it's all digital. The car records, and when cars are near the station, the station downloads whatever is new on the recorder over the air. Like the data terminals, all done on a separate frequency than the voice communications.
Re: Scanners
Noticing quite a lot of activity between 140 and 150 MHZ, a part of the spectrum designated for Military Air. This isn't military Air communications.
I haven't been able ID any of them for certain, but it sounds like civilian emergency dispatch.

Re: Scanners
144-148 is the 2M amateur band. I have had a few scanners that have AWFUL image rejection and you hear signals that are 10 to 22 MHz off where you are tuned , depending on the unit's I.F freq.

Thanks for that. Looks like you may be right. I didn't expect that OPP would be analog, but according to that, they are.

there are some good youtube livestreams where people can listen to these. Its cozy to listen to the commentary.

Re: Scanners
So I checked out the action down by the rail lines today. Lots of on air activity but I didn't see any trains. Sounded like the crew was assembling a train and I could see a locomotive moving back and forth off in the distance. After about 45 minutes, I gave up and went home.
