ALES – TRANSLATORS
Grand Rapids, MI – Grand Valley State University files a $50,000 deal to buy the Grand Rapids, MI-licensed W237CZ at 95.3 FM from Goodrich Radio. The filing says the translator will simulcast the University’s news-talk/jazz WGVU-FM (88.5). It also owns “Real Oldies 1480” WGVU in the Grand Rapids market.

About time Goodrich sold off one of its redundant translators!

Will be interesting to see how good (or not) 95.3 sounds in stereo. 88.5 struggles on cheap radios close to the WYCE tower, so this is a good acquisition from that standpoint.
Will also throw a decent signal into East GR.
Doesn't do a damn thing, though, to improve reception in Cascade, Ada, and Lowell. WION of all stations found a way to cover those communities with a good FM signal! 100.3 makes it all the way to the East Beltline.

The change over happened this afternoon at 2 pm.

Did WGVU only purchase the FM translator? Or did they purchase the remaining WPRR frequencies as well?
Southpaws airs Saturday nights at 11:00 on Global Community Radio Channel 1; weekly on Pacifica Radio affiliates KCEI-FM 90.1, Taos, NM; KZGM-FM 88.1, Cabool, MO; WMTB-LP 96.7, St. Petersburg, FL. Available on Spreaker, Apple Podcasts, & Pandora.

Grand Valley only bought the 95.3 translator. I have no idea if Mr. Goodrich is selling off any of his other properties. I'm guessing his 102.5 translator, might be of interest to someone else. (it's been transmitting nothing but dead air again for the past several weeks.) The 1680 AM frequency is basically worthless.

Given that they also have 95.3 in Muskegon, this seems to make sense
Re: GVSU files a $50,000 deal to buy 95.3 translator from Goodrich Radio.
It's my understanding everything is for sale. 102.5 can't be separated from the AM as it was part of the AM Revitalization (haha). It's tied to the license forever otherwise GVSU would have jumped on that one also. If someone wants 102.5 they need to purchase 1680. If 1680 shuts down then 102.5 goes with it.originalzzmfmjock wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 12:47 pmI have no idea if Mr. Goodrich is selling off any of his other properties. Could GVSU buy 1680 and 102.5, move Real Oldies to 1680 (and 102.5), and sell or turn in 1480?radionut wrote: ↑Wed Jun 10, 2020 8:57 amIt's my understanding everything is for sale. 102.5 can't be separated from the AM as it was part of the AM Revitalization (haha). Re: GVSU files a $50,000 deal to buy 95.3 translator from Goodrich Radio.
Why would they want 1680 instead of 1480? 1680's nighttime signal blows. Plus, it wouldn't shock me if some of 1480's listeners have receivers that lack expanded AM band access.
GVSU could purchase 102.5 and simply change the AM station it translates.
I think Cumulus should consider purchasing 102.5. Would be a better pairing with 1340 than 106.1 if 102.5 were to be moved to the Butterworth & Garfield tower site. 106.1 could then be moved to Ottawa County, if desired.

I'm pretty sure you can't change the associated station of a translator that was assigned under the AM Revitalization.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Wed Jun 10, 2020 6:38 pmGVSU could purchase 102.5 and simply change the AM station it translates.

Why not? Shouldn't matter if the new feeder station is on the AM dial and complies with the distance limitations. FCC approval would certainly be required, but I doubt it would be withheld.

Actually, 102.5 is only tied to 1680 for 4 years from the date it was licensed. The translator was granted its current license on 3/7/17. They can be separated as soon as next year.radionut wrote: ↑Wed Jun 10, 2020 8:57 amIt's my understanding everything is for sale. 102.5 can't be separated from the AM as it was part of the AM Revitalization (haha).
