With the Coronovirus..are any local radio stations allowed to stay on((daytime only ones)) or stay on with full power as opposed to powering down???
Might be a moot point since aren't most local these days....

Re: 24 hr service/power
There IS an FCC rule allowing daytime only stations to operate at night during an emergency. Now, whether or not the current situation would qualify, I could not tell you, but the rule does exist.

Re: 24 hr service/power
You may want to email Dale.Bickel@fcc.gov to see if he knows of any special statements addressing this. If I were the FCC, I would address this special situation. I think I would specify that they must use no more than the minimum power necessary to serve the community and surrounding area. I would not allow AM Daytime Class D stations to operate with powers in excess of 5000 watts directional with Night Pattern with DA or 1000 watts nondirectional or so at Night or CH, as they limit the service of other cochannel and adjacent channel stations VERY GREATLY at night, and certainly not in excess of the authorized Day power.
The old technical "Clear Channels", or Class A (I-A and I-B) were supposed to be used exclusively in these national emergency situations.

Just a point...the rule I am talking about predates the EAS by many many years, and probably even the EBS.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sat Mar 21, 2020 3:33 pm The only way that could occur is if EAS has been activated prior to the station's scheduled sign-off time, I presume.
There is no EAS broadcast in effect, so it's a moot point. Based on current circumstances, the answer to the question is "no."

Too bad they decommissioned Conelrad. They could have told the Daytimers to move to 640 or 1240 so as not to interfere with many existing full-time stations. I remember Conelrad being tested. I don't remember much, but I turned on the TV and there were no stations on the air. I don't know about CKLW-TV 9, as they had a limited signal due to their 650 foot HAAT, and I was 60 miles away from the old Riverside Dr. facilities. Basically, it was 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 that were off the air, all normally received quite well on our outside 40 foot tower, all 35-45 miles away. I don't think 10 and 12 had signed on yet when that test occurred. We were the last people on our block to have a TV, but the first to have a tower. People with guyed rooftop antennas, they were always falling down.
