The media wants you to panic

Post by lovinlife101 » Sun Mar 15, 2020 8:24 am

This is journalistic malpractice.

12 of the top 14 stories on the Detroit News homepage are coronavirus.

20 of 21 on the Detroit Free Press’ homepage are coronavirus.

The media says things like “we didn’t do this,” #factsoverfear, “all we said was to wash your hands.”

100% false.

It wants you to fear. It wants you to panic. It makes for a better story.

This is a global pandemic. I am a molecular biologist (albeit not a virologist, but have extensive work in viral genomes) and there have been several experts in virology and epidemiology who put the number of infections at 40-60 million in the US with mortality numbers around 1 million. 12-18 months to gain immunity which means this may flare up again in the fall (if it turns out to be seasonal).

The virus is mutating as we speak and will undoubtedly be very difficult to pin down in the immediate future of research.

Yes you can take the same steps as influenza prevention but the difference is that this genome is novel. No one has an immunity. It's a respiratory infection...do we have enough ventilators? Beds? No. Mortality rates are 10x (at least) higher than influenza.

So, yeah, putting it at the forefront of all news outlets is not a waste.
Nobody said it shouldn’t be in the forefront, but it’s all people are seeing.

87.5% of one outlet, more than 95% of another.

Come on!

What about all the mild cases that people recover from quickly? Nope. You won’t hear about them.

1million planes land safely. No news stories.

One plane crashes. Wall to wall coverage for days.

What’s to say exactly? You get a blurb commonly... “x number of people have recovered”... there isn’t anything to say.
In the same way “x number of people have died” but yet they can make it wall to wall for weeks. Interesting.

Again what exactly do you want them to say?
Maybe the truth for once?
