Someone posted a link to this article on Rocketchat for HF Underground, regarding the fire in 2008 that UMG kept hidden for years. A very sad read. It totally pisses me off. I'm assuming the entire lot of Motown's masters are gone forever, among thousands more.

A few years ago, the Chameleon Four Seasons Fan Club in the UK wanted to look for the allegedly "misplaced or not cataloged" Motown Masters from when they were with Motown/Mowest in 1971-1974. They wanted to rerelease and release unreleased materials. They offered to extensively research and look through allegedly unmarked master tapes. They told them nothing doing. They thought it was because Berry Gordy, but no one else in the organization, were fans. Luckily, Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio had bought the master tapes for "My Eyes Adored You" directly from Berry Gordy for $4000.00 circa early 1974. Motown said the eventual #1 Hot 100, RIAA Gold Record song had zero monetary value, so it was all right if somebody was willing to pay $4000.00 for nothing. They could live with that. Larry Uttal was forming Private Stock Records, and listened to it, after they struck out with other labels. Larry disagreed with the conventional wisdom. It became PS 45003. Never heard what PS 45001 and PS 45002 were, but sometimes the catalog numbers are like check numbers, you don't want to start out issuing 45001.
So maybe somebody knew they were destroyed, and you are right about the Motown Masters all being gone.

Found a closed group in the UK that says no Four Seasons Masters were lost, but if they were unmarked and not cataloged, how would they know? If it is just based on this list, somehow it must be the company line. Can we believe it?
