Grand Funk Railroad "1976"
Grand Funk Railroad "1976"

It's not often that you can connect the dots from William Shatner to Mark Farner, but in 1976, but not on the album of that name, came the Mellow AC #69 Hot 100 Ballad "Sally". Mark Farner had a relationship circa 1976 with actress Sally Kellerman, who appeared in the second pilot of the original "Star Trek" with later Priceline spokesman William Shatner. The song was written by Farner about Kellerman.

It came at a time when Mark wanted to take the group to a Softer, more marketable Mass Appeal sound, according to his sister, Sue Farner. The rest of the group balked at the idea.

Also the song "Take Me" (from "Born To Die") also hit the Billboard Hot 100. The remake of The Contours 1964 song "Can You Do It?" (from "Good Singin', Good Playin'") went to # 46 (Hot 100).
Re: Grand Funk Railroad "1976"
Like thousands of other popular songs, the lyrics are at least partly autobiographical, especially the line,
"Don't let them tell you that I'm not your kind.",
which rings true, as something Sally's Hollywood associates probably were telling Sally about Mark, along with an "heiress". who was once my neighbor in Flint, who was probably told the same thing about a classmate of mine. Because only bad boys like Mark come from Flint, right?

Re: Grand Funk Railroad "1976"
Frank was, in fact producing several bands... I rock a GTO's t-shirt quite often. Zappa was vertically integrated after is problems with Warner Bros.; he could produce a finished master in his basement. Zappa's basement studio was one of the first PCM consoles in the U.S.
I'm pretty sure that Frank was doing most of the work prior to 1980, when he hired Mark Pinske - he was definitely recording and producing both his band and other talent.
The studio was known as the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen. I've never been there but my friends have... The "Thing-Fish" and I are close friends.
Re: Grand Funk Railroad "1976"
Just to get further off track from the thread theme, because it's always fun, Todd Rundgren produced Grand Funk Railroad for a while. And Todd Rundgren recorded some other acts at Mark Farner's "The Swamp" Studio in Parshallville, by the Grist Mill, just off US-23. It always sounds like the smaller studios are the most innovative and the most fun. Don't know if Zappa did any work at The Swamp. I told Sue that I thought the move to a softer sound was probably a good idea from a commercial standpoint. I think that was the time that Mark started doing CCM, because the rest of the band didn't agree with him, and they wanted to stay on the path to that hot Livingston County town hear Pinckney, not far from Parshallville.
I see now that Zappa did do some work in Parshallville. He was reportedly afraid to stay near Flint, so he stayed in Hartland. Like Fenton was too dangerous?

Re: Grand Funk Railroad "1976"
Frank had family in Michigan, he probably knew Flint was a hell hole and hooked up with people he knew.

This was the bonus track that did NOT make it to the 1976 album "Good Singin', "Good Playin'" because of record room, the song is "Rubberneck" which has Frank Zappa on vocals!! (audio only) which is a bonus track on compact disc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rb0aNA0fBSs
