Channel-Sharing, Canadian Style
So, Corus Entertainment has made four applications on merging repeaters of Global stations onto the main transmitters of their sister stations, in a bid to both cut down on spectrum used for broadcasting, and for electricity from having to maintain multiple transmitters. instead of broadcasting multiple 1080i signals, they would see a slight drop in quality to multiple 720p feeds. The list of stations is below, with the host station at the top:
Peterborough

12.2 CIII-DT-27

Ringtail, I think Windsor is the only city that doesn't have a signal of a Global channel. Am I right in saying that???

no, we get Global programming via CIII-DT-22 (UHF 33, PSIP 22.1) from between Leamington and Wheatley. it's mostly aimed due west to Kingsville, and northeast to Chatham, but we get a usable signal too.

Re: Channel-Sharing, Canadian Style
One thing I'm especially curious about is the stations I highlighted in bold -- CKWS-DT-1 is a translator in Brighton, a town about halfway between Toronto and Kingston. CKWS-DT-2 is in Prescott, opposite Ogdensburg, New York on the St. Lawrence River. And CIII-DT-2 in in Bancroft, a town in the heart of east central Ontario.RingtailedFox wrote: ↑Mon Mar 30, 2020 7:58 pm Peterborough

I wonder what Corus is accomplishing by moving the translators closer to the larger cities, giving the big cities two different Global channels (or in Peterborough's case, three, as CIII-DT-27 already served Peterborough when CHEX-TV (a former CBC private station, like CKWS was) flipped from CTV to Global).
Re: Channel-Sharing, Canadian Style
I don't know if the signal reaches Windsor proper.Im near the old test track park in east Windsor.RingtailedFox wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 1:38 pm no, we get Global programming via CIII-DT-22 (UHF 33, PSIP 22.1) from between Leamington and Wheatley. it's mostly aimed due west to Kingsville, and northeast to Chatham, but we get a usable signal too.
I have 2 good antenna's and haven't got a sniff on rf33.I know there's a Global signal on rf35 sharing with WUDL.Which they cancel each other out on that freq.
I will have to swing them around towards Leamington and see what pops on rf33.

I live near the bridge... my rooftop antenna picks it up when I aim it towards Leamington, perhaps that's why...

Re: Channel-Sharing, Canadian Style
It has CIII-TV-22 near Stephenson, though it has the awkward disadvantage that the antenna has to be turned around, since most non-cable Windsorites usually have their antennas aimed at Southfield.
Re: Channel-Sharing, Canadian Style
I point my clearstream 4V at Leamington and nothing, must be a null towards the US border.
And yes innate your right most antenna's are without rotor and pointed at southfield and a few at Toledo still getting most of Det. off the side or back door.
Most don't know of the Global signal but not available in most of the city.

If I remember correctly, Global's signal *is* nulled towards Detroit, and yes, it is the most difficult Canadian station for me to pick up, because of that. Don't' fret if you don't receive it, because I often have difficulty tuning in, too!

I used to get ch. 22 back in the analog days once in a while.RingtailedFox wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 1:52 pm If I remember correctly, Global's signal *is* nulled towards Detroit, and yes, it is the most difficult Canadian station for me to pick up, because of that. I would be surprised if this happens. Re: Channel-Sharing, Canadian Style
Back when the channel 22 transmitter was still in Cottam, they had to substitute some programming in prime time in order to make the US networks happy, as their signal easily reached Detroit. They later moved to Stevenson after a transmitter fire, but a few years after that, they had to adjust its signal, as channel 22 from Stevenson could be easily tuned in across Lake Erie in Cleveland. Some Guy from Toledo wrote: ↑Thu Apr 09, 2020 1:40 pmI used to get ch. They haven't even made subchannels carrying separate original programming completely legal in Canada, as the CRTC loves kilometers of red tape.audiophile wrote: ↑Thu Apr 09, 2020 5:55 pmI would be surprised if this happens. LOL, kilometers!
To bad they couldn't have done some channel sharing instead of switching off many of the rural CBC TV signals. Trading across the country could have been win-win.
Speaking of that CBET is coming in for the first in long while.

Re: Channel-Sharing, Canadian Style
The only substitute programming I saw from (what was then) CKGN-TV-22 was, for about two years, a black-and-white slide with the "three merged Gs" denoting "Programming will resume at n:nn pm".rugratsonline wrote: ↑Thu Apr 09, 2020 8:44 pmBack when the channel 22 transmitter was still in Cottam, they had to substitute some programming in prime time in order to make the US networks happy, as their signal easily reached Detroit. After about two years, the American program hours would be replaced with a video text news feed, like so many cable systems offered in that era.
Then CKGN-TV-22 (Cottam) was destroyed by a fire.
About ten years later, CIII-TV-22 came on the air from Stephenson (combined with a CTV transmitter, on Channel 16, that still carries CTV2 programming (I guess from that location, the coverage contour precisely matches the path of the Detroit River). CTV2 also has a transmitter in Downtown Windsor, beaming Southeastward, with all stateside land effectively nulled out. An amazing technological feat!
