Unusual DX for me.

Unread post by Radiobingoking »

This past Sunday (12/29/2019) evening about 9:30pm I was at the Walpole Island dock and was able to listen to the Red Wings on 1110AM. From what I can find the only Wings affiliate on that frequency is WJML. Is it possible for 10 watts to make it that far to the southeast from Petoskey? The signal faded before we reached the Algonac dock.

WJML has been heard in SE Michigan before Sunset since they went on the air in 1966 with 10000 watts. But I doubt you would hear it on their PSSA with 10 watts.
Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Thank you for your response, CK-722. It seems odd to me, too, because the only large body of water in line was Lake Huron. But it definitely was the Wings game I heard. The only other unusual DX was one time back in the 80's I heard WPIE 1160 in Trumansburg, NY in Livonia with their night power of 310 watts.

Back when people were doing this, I used to get reports from South Ill. on our AM-580 station as well as many from Finland, all always at our night time power of 500 watts. Never of our 50k daytime power. Now days the internet has done away with most of the hobby.

WTCM actually radiated more toward Southern Illinois when they were 800 watts Night than they do now. Can't remember what the previous 500 watt Night pattern was like or if I even had it in a Database. Probably like the 800 watt pattern. Click "Display Pattern Of Directional Antenna" on the 0.8 kW Night facility at this link. The file number is "BL-19960904AA".

https://www.fccdata.org/?lang=en&appid= ... acid=70524

Before pattern change, WTCM at 50 kW goes very well to the South during Critical Hours, usually right before Sunset. I heard it driving through Toledo right before pattern change on the car radio once. Then I heard CKWW playing "Walking In The Rain" by Glodean White and The Love Unlimited Orchestra after WTCM changed.

They have to protect WILL, CKWW, and the phantom CKPR Thunder Bay facility in the Daytime.

Speaking of WTCM I have heard it several times in the early morning on I-696 between the 96/275 junction and Orchard Lake Road. I suspect that is a null on CKWW's pattern.

It's interest how that works in regards to signal strength and distance. I remember occasionally getting 1210 AM WQLS (Montgomery, AL) on clear nights up in Cheboygan in the '90s. Seems like too far of a distance, considering there are other stations on the 1210 frequency north of Montgomery.

There are ion clouds that reflect signals according to more or less optical rules (The angle of incidence=the angle of reflection.). A mirror in space would have a limited number of paths that it reflects. The ion clouds act in a similar way, often favoring far signals over near.

In researching this answer, it revealed that WQLS is now WTXK.

I know what you mean. Back in the day when WQTE (now WRDT) signed off I never knew what the night signal would be in Detroit. Depending on the day it could be WIND (Chicago), WJLS (Beckley, WV), WIS (now WVOC in Columbia, SC), WQAM in Miami or even CJKL in Kirkland Lake, ON.

Cool. I remember it as WQLS, didn't know there was a change.

Are the highlighted listings new catches for you TC?

1180 KGOL is one I haven't logged. Well done!

750 WSB and 1140 WRVA are usually present when I do a scan.

870 WWL New Orleans, which didn't turn up on your scan, used to be a dependable nighttime catch but has been a tough pull for quite some time now.
