WNEM News Director and Masters

Unread post by nonewsgoodnews »

WNEM News Director Jayne Hodak was at the Masters this past week. The word at the station is she used media credentials to go but didn't provide one iota of coverage for the station. She would be the first to nail anyone at the station if they were to do it. Not shocking that she is that hypocritical. It's basically how she runs everything at the station. She doesn't come to the station half the week. She works from their Flint bureau on certain days because it's closer to her home. Crazy that a News Director isn't actually in the newsroom where the people are. She has lost all respect from her newsroom. You can expect more people hitting the door.

And you can expect GM Ken to continue to back her… even as everyone not in Jayne’s inner circle flees. Ken is as big of a problem as Jayne.

Jayne spends more time out of the office Han actually supervising her team.

After returning from the Master’s and posting photos of her and her husband day drinking while using her media credentials… her next big to do was spend time at the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame, inducting Carolyn Clifford. I bet many of her colleagues wish they could spend as much company time on the clock going to sporting events and hanging out with friends. That News Director job doesn’t look too hard…

Don’t most News Directors spend their time out of the newsroom? I mean the credential thing is bad, if true. But being out of the office all the time isn’t an outlandish thing. Right?

This sounds like an issue for the Masters and the Station to sort. I used to get press credentials all the time without coverage. The only organization that ever said a word was Taste of Chicago.

Do you people really understand this business? P. R. folks want media to attend stuff, coverage or not. Doesn't Grand Blanc have a PGA event? It makes total sense.

No --most news directors are not out of the building half of the week. Yes, News directors have meetings and can't always be in the newsroom. But, to not be in the building because you are working out of a bureau so you don't have to commute is ridiculous.
In a market like Flint/Saginaw, a news director should be in the newsroom helping with the day to day operations especially in a newsroom where they are short staff. They should be a mentor and work with young producers and reporters.
Sitting in a bureau where there is hardly any actual staff there is not exactly being a leader.
That is when she actually goes into the bureau at all.
I guess if you can work out that deal with your GM, good for you. It's just crap for the rest of the newsroom that has to pick up the pieces.

She absolutely got on her staff for doing the same thing before.

I’ve heard the WJRT news director doesn’t live in the viewing area either. I feel like this is a common thing now a days that these people aren’t in their newsrooms.
