Gannett screws over award winning Holland Sentinel editor

Post by MWmetalhead » Thu May 09, 2024 2:06 pm

This is an excellent and eye opening report on Gannett's toxic corporate culture from The Detroit News:

I feel bad for the employees of Gannett's community newspapers across Michigan.

Is anyone surprised about gannet?

That editor will land solidly elsewhere. This may have been a gift. She may get hired by The Bridge.

The Bridge is excellent; that is a terrific thought.

WOOD-TV has hired newspaper reporters in the past; maybe she'd be a good fit for them, too.

I'm actually surprised that paper still exists. It's a joke compared to what it used to be.

I too am surprised that most of these papers are still printed.

I picked up a Sunday Port Huron Times Herald recently. 20 years ago it was a decent paper. Now, one local story. One. The rest is wire stories and retreads from the Free Press. And it's printed in Grand Rapids. Why bother?

Exactly. I believe the Port Huron newsroom is down to one reporter, which is just crazy.

Doesn't Gannett own the Detroit News?

They own The Detroit Free Press now. They essentially swapped out ownership of The Detroit News for ownership of The Detroit Free Press in a confusing transaction that closed about 15 years ago, I believe.

Wasn't the Lansing Journal's distribution outsourced as well by Gannett?

they sound worse than MLive which destroyed the GR Press and A2 News.

MLive destroyed ALL the newspapers they own. The Bay City Times and Saginaw News are a shell of what they used to be. Skimpy local coverage as I get more local news from watching it on TV. And $5 for a Sunday paper? 😳😡

How much revenue do newspapers generate?

How much does it cost to produce a Sunday paper and get it delivered?

Costs go up as revenue drops.

Social Media has low content costs (you are the product) and cheap distribution. Plus, that is where people under 70 spend their time.

I thought the Port Huron paper was owned by Gannett. The Sentinel is also Gannett owned but prints in Adrian

The Grand Rapids Press facility closed several years ago. That paper is owned by MLive which is turn is owned by Advance. And now prints in Cleveland.

The Holland Sentinel is pretty much the same way in terms of very little original local reporting. Most local stories are based off of Facebook posts or have received the copy/paste treatment from press releases. With their production/distribution setup the paper seems to have a print deadline of 5 or 6 pm so that the paper can be printed and driven across the state to Holland's post office for afternoon delivery to print subscribers.
