U-M enters $490 million monetary settlement with Anderson victims
How interesting that this gets announced mere days after Schlissel was unceremoniously (and rightfully) shitcanned.
One must wonder if he was standing in the way of this agreement being finalized? I think that is actually unlikely, but one never knows.
Instead, I think the Regents wanted to start with a clean slate, and the only way to ensure that occurred was to fire Schlissel given his baggage.

To the best of my knowledge, the Detroit News is the first mainstream media outlet to report on the settlement.

Schlissel fought the sought reforms and likely fought this settlement. Now both major University Presidents have lost their leadership positions over sexual abuse issues they refused to address.

Re: U-M enters $490 million monetary settlement with Anderson victims
The first two posts in this thread are drawing incorrect conclusions: the prior lack of a settlement had NOTHING to do with Schlissel. It was always a Regents' decision to direct and authorize.

The last paragraph of this MLive article seems to be at odds with your view:
https://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/20 ... higan.html
It sounds like the plaintiff attorneys did not trust the university to properly implement cultural change and to administer the settlement if Schlissel were still President, rightly or wrongly. This potentially explains why both sides only agreed to finalize the deal after Schlissel was booted.
Technically, Matt is correct that the Regents need to authorize the settlement, and presumably, could do so even if the President were not on board.

Melt down the statue of Bo and sell it for scrap to help pay for it. The U of M is a very well-endowed university and it is sad that money must go toward a settlement with the victims of Anderson, rather than to support scholarships for bright minds.

I'd take a finger up my ass for $466,666 any time.

Shall we open bidding?
New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.

I'll bid $5, but I get to assign a designated hitter.

Why pay that much? Honeyman would probably do it for free.

I guess I believe rape / sexual assault by a man in a position of power against students - and a multi decade institutional cover up - are no laughing matter.

Re: U-M enters $490 million monetary settlement with Anderson victims
Schlissel was never the issue. They pushed him out, which they had to after the investigation, but if you think a settlement decision just magically materialized in 96 hours, you would be incorrect. The structure of the settlement and the vetting required had to have been in place. From an optics and PR standpoint, the university looks good with the timing, but optics aren't what they seem. It's worth noting that the whining about covid issues also was NOT a Schlissel thing - the buck stops at the Regents.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 11:53 amThe last paragraph of this MLive article seems to be at odds with your view:

Re: U-M enters $490 million monetary settlement with Anderson victims
Detroit News says 98% have signed onto the agreement...so 1000 victims and 20 holdouts....one being the most vocal and biggest name. But of course, Michigan isn't trying to pull anything here at all....trying to use the other 980 people to pressure Jon Vaughn to stop before the dirt digging actually starts.
DETNEWS: "The settlement also requires former UM football player and Anderson accuser Jon Vaughn to take down his encampment in front of the UM's president's house within this week, according to three sources."
Next press conference will be at the enabler Bo's statue to announce the Harbaugh extension. Go Blue.

And as of 6:41 p.m. there is no mention of the settlement in the Free Press.
Amazing.

Strange...your link works but when I still go to the main page, there is nothing. Maybe because I'm out of state or not a subscriber.Matt wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 7:01 pmUh, it's been up all day at the freep: https://www.freep.com/story/news/educat ... 553333001/
