A Sad Tale of Great Radio--- the BIG8

Unread post by windsor »

I came across this today and thought a lot of you might enjoy reading again about the demise of the Big8 CKLW.

A bit more info that a lot of you might not have known.Classic example of Big Gov't overreach that I despise. :barf

Remember when reading, the gov't of the day was Pierre Trudeau's Liberal Party and Lucky Pierre's heroes were Mao, Castro and Stalin.

I think Grant Hudson's quote says it all about the BIG 8...…

“CKLW was a collection of men and women that somehow, in this one moment in time in Windsor, Ontario, got it all together and turned the radio business upside down.”

I wouldn't blame the CRTC for making CKLW more Canadian, but rather, the suits at CHUM for making it a regular talk station and later owners CTV for making THAT less local.

Charlie Van Dyke and the Million Dollar Weekend.....Unscoped yet

March 20 1976 , I was jumping between the Big8, WABX, W4 and John Landecker on 89WLS at night in those days.

It’s not just only a sad situation for CKLW it was sad for all AM top 40 stations of that era WLS, WCFL, WKNR, WTAC, WKNX, WABC, WILS and I could keep going FM killed the AM radio star in the mid 70’s.

Lucky615, have you ever been on the ARSA (Airheads Radio Survey Archive) site? They have over 100,000 Music Surveys from over 3800 stations worldwide, mainly from the USA and Canada. Most of those stations you mention have nearly complete collections of the Surveys for their entire Top 40 Era. Some of those stations also have a big footprint considering that many of them have relatively short Top 40 runs (like WCFL, WKNR, and some of the other "second" tier Top 40s in Smaller Michigan Markets) still have a substantial number of surveys. You need to have a membership to access all of the information and sorting routines. If you think about it, smaller markets have lower numbers of individual charts published, and those were collected by relatively few people, and few surveys have survived. In a few smaller markets, you have a few radio geeks who managed to collect and save all or nearly all of the surveys from a smaller station. But most smaller market stations have only managed perhaps 10 percent of surveys. Very small market stations, like WJML, only have 3 or less.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?
