Funny you mention 7M3... I've had Water's Edge in my head for a few days now.mkhopper wrote: ↑Mon Nov 23, 2020 2:36 pm So long as we're coming up with lists of what bands should be on a decent alternative station, I'll add some.
Moloko
Sisters of Mercy
The Cult
iio
Cold
The Crystal Method
Our Lady Peace
Sloan
Puddle of Mudd
The Alarm
Social Distortion
Was (Not Was)
Tragically Hip (I know this was mentioned, but they're too good not to be brought up again)
XTC
Eels
Amanda Marshall
Seven Mary Three
Saliva
Default
Fountains of Wayne (Anything but Stacy's Mom... They have so many decent singles to pick from, I don't get how this one track is the only one ever played)

Re: 98.7 Alternative!
I have heard REM get played, but I doubt much pre-grunge alternative will get played, the same for anything outside the grunge, britpop, pop-punk bands. I don't think we will hear much of the female artist that broke out during the 90's or any of the Industrial that actually broke on radio for a bit. What I really don't understand is why they play Beastie Boys from 85.
Re: 98.7 Alternative!
I have listened a lot... And I am already burned out on the tight playlist.
I am guessing the 10,000 song kickoff should have been called 200 songs on a loop played 500 times.

Let me find out they're playing Fight For Your Right To Party every morning between 7:30 and 8:00 a la WLLZ...szmigiel wrote: ↑Mon Nov 23, 2020 6:39 pm I have heard REM get played, but I doubt much pre-grunge alternative will get played, the same for anything outside the grunge, britpop, pop-punk bands. As for the pre-grunge stuff, ehhhhh...you might get a couple of "staples" like a token REM or U2 song, but most, if not all, of that stuff has tested out. Kinda like how Beatles music started being the starting point of classic rock.
How about something like Beds Are Burning by Midnight Oil?

Re: 98.7 Alternative!
Gee, I hope not. There was a period that all the female artists sounded like whiney bitches even if they weren't.
New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.

Did someone go visit Ouelette and say “this is what the people will give you money if you do it”....?
If they did.... I’d be amazed.
Nobody home on Ouelette, No GM no PD's Bell has gutted the place. Just the ghost of Byron McGreggor in the haunted basement.

Not much different then then the emo bands they are already playing.

Corporate ALT radio gives Alternative music a bad name. Wish they would just call it EMO 98.7, Detroit's 24 hour whine station.

I haven't heard any emo. Everclear, RHCP, and Soundgarden are what I heard yesterday. I haven't heard any My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, AFI, or Panic at the Disco.

They/them, non-binary and proud.
Remember that “2000 Mules” was concocted by a circus of elephants.
The right needs to stop worry about what’s between people’s legs. Instead, they should focus on what’s between their ears.
Audacity sucks.

Try randomly bring up their recently played list online, I can almost guarantee one or more of those bands will be listed.MotorCityRadioFreak wrote: ↑Sat Nov 28, 2020 10:32 am I haven't heard any emo. Re: 98.7 Alternative!
Yeah, I heard Teenagers by My Chemical Romance this morning. Which, btw, isn't terrible and sounds almost like a bluesy sound. They had one or two decent songs back when.
This is akin to creating a "classic rock" station in 1984, and then playing a Beatles song followed by Run DMC and Whitney Houston, followed by Rolling Stones, then a couple of Bee Gees songs. It's frustrating. I don't think a lot of these companies understand "branding". "Altenative" means 95.5 music, and the "next generation of classic rock" means Hendrix and Foghat. Gotcha. Pardon me while I open a McDonald's and serve brussel sprouts and steamed clams.

Re: 98.7 Alternative!
The fact is, you can't say in liners that you're for disgruntled 89x listeners, and then play 2 songs an hour 89x played in 2004, and then a bunch of shit 89x wouldn't be caught dead playing.
I knew it was only a matter of time until the music of my childhood/teen years was boiled down to 15 or 20 songs, after the plethora of stuff that came out. How about "The Distance" by Cake? "Banditos" by Refreshments? "Pepper" by Butthole Surfers? I guess it's okay to play CHR washouts from 10 years ago, but not stuff that AOR wouldn't touch. At one time, Matchbox 20 and Sugar Ray fell under "alternative" and have made headway at AC radio, why not shove them in there, too? Playing new coffehouse shit on an "alternative" station. Ffs.
