As a Michigan fan I suppose that's a bit of good news since he seems like he has a solid future on the court. But you never know till he gets to the next level. Being the best kid on the court in high school is one thing but at the next level which ever he picks, the court is full of former high school stars.

Saw some of the Memphis game last night. Tied with a minute or so left, Bates bringing the ball up, it gets stolen and leads to a layup. Memphis loses.

He looks like he has regressed and is beyond raw. Bates has always been about Bates. His daddy had him leave MSU because he knew Izzo would be calling the shots and wouldn't let him do whatever he wanted. I am sure he's set for life and will sign a big NBA contract, but you wonder what kind of player he could have been if he let himself be coached.

Ypsilanti native and Eastern Michigan basketball star Emoni Bates was arrested Sunday night on a gun charge, the Free Press has learned.

Bates was pulled over by the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office at 10:43 p.m. when an officer saw Bates failed to stop at the intersection of Nottingham and Clark Rd. in Superior Township, according to the sheriff's office.

According to police, a firearm was discovered in the car upon investigation and Bates, 18, was taken into custody and held in jail overnight.

Not sure I could fault the guy though. I mean he probably WAS driving through parts of Ypsilanti and "packing heat" might have been a safe move there.

He has no criminal history, supposedly, so it would be completely legal for him to own a firearm.

The main issue here is the firearm found in the vehicle evidently wasn't cased properly and had its serial number etched off. Who the hell knows if (a) he was even aware the gun was in the car, and (b) if he was involved with the defacing of the serial number.

I think the prosecution will have a difficult case to prove, if they decide to pursue felony charges.

Having a handgun inside your vehicle, without a concealed pistol license, is a five year felony in the State of Michigan. If his prints are on the pistol in question, it should be a slam dunk. If his prints are not found on the gun, the prosecutor can still infer constructive possession and get a conviction.
