Wow! Excited to see what the new owners do with this legendary/old AM radio station. Sounds like they'll keep it a political talk station, at least for a while.
Re: cumulus unloads 770 wabc
Remember that Cumulus is leaving the top 15 markets. Now 103.9 is the only station left in NYC.

WLS-AM in Chicago, or what's left of it anyway, can't be far behind.
Re: cumulus unloads 770 wabc
WJR has to be on the block as well.
Re: cumulus unloads 770 wabc
Got to agree on that.

The fact not a single incumbent broadcaster in the Tri-State region wanted this 50 kW clear channel signal should serve as a massive wakeup call to everyone as to the long-term viability of AM radio as a mainstream broadcasting platform.
It also serves as a testament to just how quickly and severely the Dickey Brothers destroyed WABC's intangible value. Fifteen years ago, this station would've been valued north of $80 million easily. Even in 2010, it would've been worth easily $50 million to $60 million.
Let this sink in - 770 WABC just sold for the same price as 102.7 Mt. Clemens. In fact, 102.7 Mt. Clemens actually sold for more, when one considers the fact that particular deal also included non-cash consideration granted by EMF to Urban One.

WLS Chicago I think will fall the same fate in terms of price perhaps. AM radio is dying a slow death, in fact a lot of boom boxes and some Stereo receivers don't even offer an AM radio on them anymore. In short, WABC was sold for junk change. WJR is in a better place then WLS and WABC is, but still I think Cumulus is going to take a bath on that one too. Who knows? WLS could go to a religious broadcaster, it's a bit far fetched but that would be wild.
Re: cumulus unloads 770 wabc
The fact that WABC sold so cheap is a real testament to just how bad AM stations have declined in recent years. Many people are finally realizing how bad our political system really is, and then the whole spin-radio gig loses their attention. Many people are also having the same epiphany regarding what is basically "religious marketing via radio"."You're a horrible person and going to hell... but please send money to my ministry and I'll put in a good word for ya!"
It's happened really slow, but it continues. Full service local AM stations, even some playing music, still seem to do well in most cases, the problem are that there are so few of them left. I believe the average person, if they even realize AM exists, has the perception that AM is full of nothing but old people arguing or banging on their Bible. Their perception isn't really wrong, either.

Radio *could* actually be a lot better when they, and other large chains, cease to exist AND more stations return to local ownership. The problem is, groups like EMF will probably buy most of them. I mean, like we really *need* K-Love on 95 of the 101 available frequencies.RingtailedFox wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2019 12:42 amit's a fire sale! legendary radio stations at legendary prices! we're in debt up to our eyeballs and gotta raise some cash FAST! so come get some deals before they, like we, are gone forever!

Did 77 WABC Radio ever get sold? Went on their website yesterday, wabcradio.com and noticed it still says "Cumulus." Seems like that sale may be taking a lot longer than when Cumulus unloaded other New York city stations like 94.7 and 95.5-fm.
