Perhaps my favorite app. Completely saved my ass a couple weeks ago when I was driving from Connecticut to Newark. Not at all familiar with the area, I had thought the only way to get from point A to point B was to go thru the Bronx and face the GWB which was a frigging nightmare. It knew traffic was awful and rerouted me north and got me on the old Tappan Zee bridge and down thru New Jersey.

If you're as directionley challenged as I am, it is invaluable.

I'm an old school guy myself. Sometimes technology, though it can be challenging to understand, results in real progress.

A roadmap won't tell you which lane is blocked and why, or when an accident was reported. Both can give you a clue to how long a backup might still be present and if it's going to be an issue by the time you get there.

Years ago, in Waze's infancy, I was driving down I-75 through Georgia and Waze directed me to get off at some rinky-dink exit in the middle of nowhere. As it was coming up quickly, I jumped off but then pulled over to see where it was routing me in case I just wanted to get right back on the highway. It showed me a route about 4-5 miles east to a 2 lane road that paralleled I-75 for 10-15 miles where it directed me to get back on I-75. Just before that re-entry point was a truck roll-over that just occurred on I-75. I would have driven at least 5 miles before traffic would have backed up and by then it would have been TOO LATE to get off the highway. It EASILY saved me HOURS that day.

In the "old days", a CB radio would give you the same info. Trucks would relay conditions for miles so you would know what to expect long before you got somewhere, and they would re-route folks similar to above. That worked for me for YEARS and I still have a portable CB in the car but haven't used it much.

My phone on the kitchen wall doesn't do aps.

I used Waze then I stopped only because Google Maps was preloaded on every new Android phone I got and it worked OK. I am a minimalist when it comes to APPs. I don't need multiple ones doing the same thing.
But recently I went back to Waze because I like the warning features better and the ease with which I can contribute.

The whole 'Google Maps' vs Waze thing is confusing. Google owns both.

But they are different. GM owns Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac but the products aren't all the same.

I agree with many of the posters here that Waze is definitely the way to go. I use it on my commutes just because of how well it optimizes and adapts its directions based on current traffic conditions.

I don't like the cartoonish, gimmicky icons on Waze. I prefer Google Maps' cleaner interface. I also think Google Maps does a somewhat better job of routing, especially in rush hour traffic. Both are certainly very useful, and both are superior to Ford's navigation software.

I've never used waze. I've understood it to be used for avoiding speed traps.

Funny that you say that... I'm in SSM right now and last year on this trip I got a speeding ticket from the Log Cabin Republican sheriff of Chippewa County in a fake construction zone on 75. The challenge was on zoom and I wasn't given access to the "evidence." My insurance hasn't changed for 2 cycles though.
