But I thought the modern trend in middle class thinking was just to hold off and let the he/she proclaim their own gender, once she/he has decided on the gende with whichr he/she identifies (Probably with help of the school's Guidance Counselor).

While I think these parties are just silly and they only occur because the parents are enthralled with the "look at me" culture we have in America, the fact is that I can find no indication that there was a burn ban in place for their area.

In my estimation, this was a tragic accident. Stupid and avoidable, but an accident nonetheless.
