CHYR Radio 7 Leamington
CHYR Radio 7 Leamington
This station was my alternative to CKLW The Big 8 and WKNR Keener 13 in the late 60’s and early 70’s, before I discovered FM rock. www.chyr7.com
Re: CHYR Radio 7 Leamington
The Day pattern of CHYR 710 with 10000 watts had a very wide major lobe, and had a better signal than CKLW 800 in the areas to the Northwest which are being discussed on other threads as being worse now than they remembered.

Re: CHYR Radio 7 Leamington
Under Bell Media's ownership both CKWW and CKLW are inferior in terms of signal strength than what they used to be. CKLW is now about even with WJR on a signal strength meter where I live. Their directional pattern was good at sending a higher power my way compared to the non-directional signal from WJR in the past.
580 CKWW often has severe co-channel interference at night in recent years.
Watch nobody from Bell or its radio stations ever reply to anyone about this matter.

Re: CHYR Radio 7 Leamington
With the CKLW format targeted toward Windsor and the surrounding area in Canada, there seems to be no great motivation to put much signal beyond there.
Like I mentioned before, CKLW's signal in Genesee County, MI was never as strong as WJR, and a neighborhood ham even said maybe they were saying 15000 watts, not 50000 watts, when I asked why. No mention of them being DA. CKLW has not been nondirectional since the late 1940s. Before 1941, they were 5000 watts nondirectional on 1030. From 1941 until the late 1940s, they were 5000 watts nondirectional on 800. Maybe he thought they were a skywave protected clear channel, which they never were, despite their wide skywave coverage to the NNE, and ESE, equivalent to a Clear Channel inverse directional field in those directions at Night.
CHYR 710 was also stronger in Genesee County than CKLW 800 was, due to its DA with wide major lobe, covering the NW. CKLW could probably have radiated more toward the NW toward the vacated CBQ Thunder Bay, but there's still WSGW 790 and former Daytimers like WPCA, formerly WDUX, 800 Waupaca, WI.

Re: CHYR Radio 7 Leamington
Does CKLW have to protect CJBQ 800 in Belleville, Ontario as well?. Just wondering what the power was when CKLW was CKOC 540 way back in its early days.Ben Zonia wrote: ↑Sun Jan 28, 2024 10:28 pmWith the CKLW format targeted toward Windsor and the surrounding area in Canada, there seems to be no great motivation to put much signal beyond there.

Re: CHYR Radio 7 Leamington
CKLW does protect CJBQ, and the CKLW null at Night is directed toward it. There is or was also a 790 station, once CHIC, that would have required protection.
Never realized that CHIC 790 celebrated "Chicks" with all female DJs at one point. Thought it was probably CHIC (pronounced sheek), rather than Chick, which has fallen out of political favor, though usually used affectionately.
I can't find the Historical summaries of each station that were on line until recently.

Re: CHYR Radio 7 Leamington
Ben, this is sorta off the subject, but I posted on the Neighboring States/ Ontario section about a 1710 from Timmins, Ontario. Any info on that?
Re: CHYR Radio 7 Leamington
They were forced off of FM in Timmins by the Canadian government. Don't know how it ended up on 1710, and can't find out much about it.Mark Nelson wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 8:19 amBen, this is sorta off the subject, but I posted on the Neighboring States/ Ontario section about a 1710 from Timmins, Ontario. I emailed the station this morning to try to get some information. I’ll post the information if I’m able to receive any.Ben Zonia wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 8:27 amThey were forced off of FM in Timmins by the Canadian government. That is on the website. I gave it a listen over the weekend, it was interesting to hear it again.audiophile wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 8:46 amI remember their long beep and the message to retune radios at sunrise/sunset.Mark Nelson wrote: ↑Sat Jan 27, 2024 4:39 pmThis station was my alternative to CKLW The Big 8 and WKNR Keener 13 in the late 60’s and early 70’s, before I discovered FM rock. www.chyr7.com
Re: CHYR Radio 7 Leamington
Here's the revised source I was looking for.
https://broadcasting-history.ca/radio/r ... #VF8016-FM
This answers a lot of questions.
CJSP 710 changed to CHYR 710 in 1967. It also increased from 1000 watts to 10000 watts Day, and added the split frequency service on 730 with 250 watts Night, in 1967.
Note that the CHYR 710 5 mV/m predicted contour extends to between Pontiac and Flint.
Night service on 730 with 250 watts actually began in 1967. I'm thinking the missing information was under the CHIR callsign on 730, later changed to CHYR-7. That was on the original History site.
Maybe Wikipedia will revise the link for the newer site.

Re: CHYR Radio 7 Leamington
I found this link for CHIM-FM. No information as to how they ended up on 1710 that I found yet. Seems like there are some DXer discussions about receiving the station on 1710. Also can't find out what regulations the FM allegedly violated.
