Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
It used to be that if you wanted to use another city in your TOH ID, you had to put a City Grade signal over the other city, and get FCC approval.
Some examples of the old IDs.
94.7-WMJC or WCSX Birmingham Detroit
100.3-WNIC-FM Dearborn Detroit
790-WSGW Saginaw Bay City
102.5-WGER Bay City Saginaw Midland (also serving Flint)
96.1-WHNN Bay City Saginaw
98.1-WKCQ Saginaw Bay City
12-WJRT-TV Flint Saginaw Bay City
5-WNEM-TV Bay City Saginaw Flint
25-WEYI-TV Saginaw Flint Bay City
1330-WEAW Evanston (a service to Metropolitan Chicago)
More recent examples, under newer rules that allowed any city in the ID.
96.3-WMBN Petoskey Traverse City
105.1-WQLZ or WGFM Cheboygan Petoskey Alpena
100.9-WFXZ Pinconning Bay City Saginaw Midland
98.5-WUPS Houghton Lake Mount Pleasant Cadillac Traverse City (confusing and took too long with seven words, thirteen syllables, especially with jingles)
102.5-WIOG Bay City Saginaw Midland Flint
96.1-WHNN Bay City Saginaw Flint Midland
93.3-WKQZ Midland Bay City Saginaw
98.1-WGFN Glen Arbor Traverse City
97.5 WKLT Kalkaska Traverse City
100.3 WHTZ Newark New York (slurred to sound like New York New York)
More recently, stations have backed away from too many cities in IDs. But they still have to say Newark.

Re: Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
WADL (TV) IDs as Mt. Clemens/Detroit
Re: Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
WXON-TV Allen Park (later changed COL to Detroit, before they wouldn't let that kind of thing happen without tap dancing around the rules, and owning all the chess pieces)
That reminds me, how did they get the WHK call letters back on heritage 1420 from 1220? I know it took several flip flops involving FMs.

Re: Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
WSMH channel 66 also used "Flint / Saginaw / Bay City" in its IDs.
Not to be confused with Newark, New York state -- a village near Rochester. While WHTZ's ID would pass muster as "Newark" followed the call sign, that fact that there's a Newark near New York City and a Newark in New York State may cause some confusion.
Re: Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
Back in the late 80's/early 90's, I recall WION in Ionia having a unique TOH ID. The ID would be the typical "WION Ionia", but would be followed by a name of a town in their listening area (Portland, Pewamo, Saranac, Westphalia, Belding etc). Each hour would feature a different "secondary" city. These were all pre-recorded, so they must have had a "pile" of IDs that they just rotated through throughout the day.
Re: Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
KYMA / Yuma AZ - El Centro CA.
Re: Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
WHMI Howell/Brighton
WXKR Port Clinton/Toledo
WRQN Bowling Green/Toledo
WBTI Lexington/Port Huron
CKWW Windsor/Detroit
Pretty much every suburban station will ID the main city in the service area.

Back in the early days of radio, stations IDed with their transmitter location. One of the more famous ones was WJJD Mooseheart, where the T antenna was located, at the Loyal Order Of Moose Headquarters.

Re: Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
That actually makes more sense to use the transmitter location. The idea of just serving one town in the coverage area is absurd.
Ask not what your country can do FOR you; ask what they are about to do TO YOU!!

Re: Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
Buried somewhere in the last break before the TOH: "WBTI Lexington-Sarnia-Port Huron" (and if you aren't listening for it, you'll miss it). Their xmtr site is in Lexingon, the city of license. In the TOH jingle, only Port Huron is mentioned.

Re: Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
Most of Georgia Public Broadcasting's TV stations had their city of license where the transmitter is based, and ID'd by the city of license followed by the city it serves (ex: "WABW-TV, Pelham / Albany"). Two stations are actually licensed in the city it serves, but still mentions its transmitter site as its second city (ex: "WVAN-TV, Savannah / Pembroke", with Pembroke being its transmitter site).audiophile wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2019 10:13 am That actually makes more sense to use the transmitter location. Re: Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
Greetings! I am a student assistant for historian Dr. Beth Fowler at Wayne State University who is writing a book about rock and roll's influence on racial attitudes during the 50s and 60s. We are looking for people who identify as black who may be interested in sharing their experiences with music during the Civil Rights Movement. In order to be eligible, you need to be between 63 and 85 years old and have grown up in the United States. If you are interested in participating in a phone or email interview, please email Oralhistory@wayne.edu and we will set up an interview time!
Feel free to share this with anyone who may be interested and looking forward to hearing from some of you!
Bridget

Re: Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present
Seems kind of odd (to me) that Mt. Pleasant would be listed before Traverse City. But oh well. But to go with that one, when you have another station simulcasting:
9 WWTV Cadillac/Mt. Pleasant/Traverse City
10 WWUP Sault Ste Marie
7 WPBN Traverse City/Cadillac
4 WTOM Cheboygan/Petoskey
What I find even more odd with 9/10, is WWUP only lists the Soo. Not anywhere else (Pickford, Mackinaw City, Cheboygan, etc).
Then you have CMU's "empire" with only each COL listed. Granted, if the voice over had listed the COL and another town/city nearby back in the day, the Hourly IDs would've taken longer than it already did lol
"Ch 6 - WCML Alpena/Cheboygan, Ch 14 WCMU Mt. Pleasant/Clare, Ch 21 WCMW Manistee/Ludington, Ch 27 WCMV Cadillac/Lake City, Ch 46 W46AD Traverse City/Suttons Bay, and Ch. 69 W69AV Leeland." lol
