3 element FM antenna

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

3 element FM antenna

Unread post by Marcus »

I am using the little ClearConX CCFM3 antenna. Although it is small, it works quite well. I'm on an apartment balcony so installing the larger CCFM8 would be physically impossible. Here are some observations. Right now it is snowing so I should not be hearing DX.

1. CBC Music on 89.9 from Windsor now comes in.
2. WRCJ on 90.9 is clear.
3. The main WUOM signal on 91.7 is there, although I tend to still get a bit of noise in the background. (The 91.3 rebroadcast in my area has always been strong)
4. The Windsor station on 95.9 is there.
5. CBC Radio One on 97.5 has about the same signal strength as WUOM. Locally 90.3 has the same programming.
6. WDZH-HD-1/2/3 decode. This is despite the fact that 98.7 isn't terrible strong in my area. When WRIF and the original WLLZ were direct competitors, WLLZ was the weaker signal.
7. I get 89.5 FM and I think it is that high school station from Auburn Hills. Their Height Above Mean Sea Level (AMSL) might help them out.
8. There is something on 104.7 and it is not WIOT. They just ID as Family Life Radio.
9. The HD signals that don't decode are 92.3 WMXD, 97.1 WXYT-FM, 103.5 WMUZ. Adjacent channel interference ruins the 97.1 HD signal. WMUZ is close to 60 miles away and there are less than 500 feet HAAT.

104.7 is W284BQ-FM, translator for WUFL. Transmitting from WUFL's site in Clinton Township.

No RF amps. Just an outdoor antenna, some RG 6 coax cable, and a Sangean HDT-20 Tuner. The ClearConX CCFM3 is actually a bit wider than it is long, so that makes it ideal for places where a larger antenna could not be used due to space. It is also superior to a 360 degree omnidirectional antenna for reception. The items that were included were a 300 to 75 ohm balun and a U bolt. On the apartment balcony a tripod is bolted to a wooden board and 3 cinder blocks keep both the FM and a TV antenna from moving. The coax cables were run beside the bedroom air conditioner. No holes were drilled anywhere.

You mentioned WMUZ being less then 500 ft AAT, I know the new tower they have been using for decades is a 500 footer (AGL), they abandoned the 300 ft tower and put up the 500 ft right next to it! Been a long time now !

The WMUZ-FM site in the West side of Detroit is 466 feet HAAT. The overall antenna height above ground is close to 500 feet.

That sounds about right, measured to the "radiation center" of stacked array antennas.
