Good Lord. I had been pretty strung out but not only never stripped copper, but also never cut down a fucking BROADCAST TOWER! Take some cans from the side of the road or something!

If the copper is only worth $100, it's like petty theft. Misdemeanor at worse.

Re: FM Tower Toppled for $100 in Copper . . .
They only would have received $100 for the copper, they should have received at least $1000 for having to put up listening to Sam Hunt songs every hour on the hour.
Re: FM Tower Toppled for $100 in Copper . . .
So they were after the copper in the transmission line which was probably hardline/heliax, also the FM radiating elements (if they knew about those).
Not to mention malicious destruction of property (est. $500K+), loss of revenue, etc.
Maybe also be some Federal offense(s) related to sabotage of an FCC licensed facility.
Wonder if there were any other services on the tower besides the FM station.

It will be interesting to see how law enforcement will handle this vs other damage by meth heads. They will likely get sent to drug court and have most likely no money for restitution. Time for an insurance claim.SolarMax wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 11:03 amSo they were after the copper in the transmission line which was probably hardline/heliax, also the FM radiating elements (if they knew about those).

It's true that it's a Federal offense, but prosecutors are usually too lazy to file the charges. Too much paperwork involved. That's government for you.

So you want government out of the way when it's convenient but when it serves you, government is lazy.Colonel Flagg wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 4:42 pm It's true that it's a Federal offense, but prosecutors are usually too lazy to file the charges. Got it.
Hope the meth heads in Michigan don't hear about this... Think of how easy it could be here.

It is a serious offense. Way more than $100 in copper. Homeland Security is now directly involved in licensed facilities. Used to be just the FCC and FAA. Homeland is also involved with local law enforcement. This will be interesting to watch.
