First Jobs

There used to be a time that news directors in this market would only hire experienced journalists for all roles on and off camera. It now seems that —especially at 25-66, but at 5 & 12 to some degree as well — that all you need is a pulse to get hired. We just hired someone out of college as a reporter. It used to be that you worked your way up from smaller markets like Traverse City, Marquette or Lansing — made your mistakes there — before getting a job in Market 70. I guess this is what happens when you’re “promoted” to you’re first News Director position in a mid-level market... you’ll just settle for anyone who will accept a position that barely pays more than McDonalds. SMH...
