I'm not a big fan of the "emo boy" or "male Adele" trend either. Sam Smith seemed to start it all "Stay with Me" though they don't really make that kind of music any more. Lewis Capaldi's "Someone You Loved" is probably the worst of the bunch IMO.
That said, I would bet money, if this ends up being true, on it being another plug-and-play Bell Media format just like Virgin or Pure Country. They might slap the 89X name on it but it would be 89X on paper only; the playlist and air staff would all be corporate. I would also not expect it to make another run at the Detroit market; they closed their Detroit sales office years ago. I have a feeling it may end up being some kind of active or mainstream rock format other than alt, not dissimilar to the previous CKUE "The Rock."
As far as the CJOM CHR shift in the early '80s, I believe that happened in late 1982. CJOM was licensed for an MOR format - they originally launched as a progressive rock format circa 1970 or '71 (turning a prog-rock block that had aired on predecessor CKWW-FM into a full-time format, in the same way that 89X would launch two decades later out of an alternative block on "88.7 The Mix"). Somewhere along the line they got the okay from the CRTC to do the CHR format on an "experimental" basis; they tried to also get a further reduction in Cancon but the CRTC shot that down.

I don't know if I can buy this one. Bell wants to cut and roll out national formats, not one of which is rock flavored at all. They blew 89x out for a reason. And I just can't see why bringing it back in any form, unless they've found a way to save/make more money with it.

Plus, there's the CRTC and format changes are expensive. This may be a wet dream..

As I said, this could be a smoke screen for something else and also, 89x was a shell of it's former self, it had died years before and the funeral was late. In it's final years, they got everything to the bone and what made 89x well.. 89x was gone. I'm mixed on this one, we will see.

Was listening to a lot of 90s stuff 89x used to play today though. I'm going to have to look through one of my photo albums, I believe I have a picture of my 1st car with an 89x cling on sticker in the back window next to a 311 decal. Are you familiar wtih Bell? They won't do anything compelling or creative with it. It will be bland and lifeless and my guess is all of the talent will be from out-of-market, accept maybe the morning drive news/traffic/weather updater. Bell is as milquetoast as it gets. My apologies to milquetoast for that unfair comparison.

I share those fears. I have a very low opinion of Bell Media. I can only hope an LMA with a third party operator is entered if the rumor about an 89X rebirth is true.

Corus on the other hand is a very good operator. It is unfortunate Bell as opposed to Corus owns the big FM signals from Windsor.

Who woulda thunk a decade ago that Blackburn Media, not Bell, would be the dominant FM radio broadcaster in Windsor today? Mix 96.7 and Cool FM have become quite successful.

A fella on the R-D board correctly noted that Stop! by Jane's Addiction contains a Spanish language prologue. That could very well explain the Spanish language theme to the stunting.

If 89X returns, I suspect that will be the first song played (just like last time).

I probably don't have anything valuable to add to this conversation, but...

As an elder millennial, I recognize tremendous value in how 89X helped my generation discover music and shape our history. However, I don't believe 89X "as it was" will ever return. We don't discover new music on the radio. Personalities aren't as influential. I can't stomach listening to Alt 98.7 because not only does it not serve the purpose of discovery or personality, it's just a niche classic hits format with a tight playlist. I can't stand listening to any of it, so if the new 89X simply duplicates Alt, I won't be a regular listener. I love discovering music, but radio doesn't seem capable of providing that anymore.

I admit I don't know what the successful solution will be, and I won't guess. What are we missing in Detroit/Windsor? Certainly not cookie-cutter-country (88.7, 95.9, 99.5, 102.9, 630/92.9, and other fringe FM's) or mainstream rock (94.7, 98.7, 101.1, 106.7, 107.1). With that many options, I don't feel that the formula for success will be properly executed by Cheapo Bell.
