89X returns?

I did notice one other reference to Detroit when I was listening, they encouraged people to use the Talkback Mic on the iheart app to vent about the Lions.

Here's the thing about Talkback on the iHeartRadio app. US listeners can't do that, as far as I can tell. They're on iHeart Canada. You can listen on a web stream, but as soon as you try to open the iHeart app in the US, it won't load 89X. I tried it. I think that's going to be consistent because of the national barrier. So they really are soliciting just from Windsor.

Just heard "Heavy is the Crown", the new Linkin Park with their new (female) singer.

a few things I thought I could contribute:

1. You can indeed submit audio using the iFart app using the talkback feature from the united states. While you cannot search for and find 89x within the app, if you visit their website 89xradio.com from a mobile browser and click the listen live link (you have to have iFart installed) you will then open the app to 89x and the talkback feature works. I heard someone from lapeer during a break.
2. I spent the weekend up near holly/ortonville area - 89x was pretty much unlistenable in that area where I seem to recall it was listenable at one point. I was hearing WIAA more often than CIMX - and that's quite a distance.
3. I am hearing advertising this morning - all for canadian businesses. Great for them!
4. A few times when I went to tune in over the weekend, CIMX had dead air.
5. MW, I live just west of US23 in monroe county - in the car, WFNT doesn't really start to affect CIMX until you get about 4-5 miles west of 23 right around exits 13 and 9. My house is 19 air miles from WFNT, and 42 air miles from CIMX. 88.7 is Unlistenable in petersburg, but clears up once you get to 23 with a few pops here and there. Terrain shadowing makes a H*** difference - for instance, driving in downtown milan headed southbound on wabash road, you'll hear WFNT simply because of all of the buildings to the east blocking CIMX. WFNT is ~27mi from Milan. Directional antenna on the roof at home makes this a non-issue for me (even if it was, I Don't think anyone could ever do anything about it now that the 'cat is out of the bag')

About 7am, S of 96 and W of 23, both 88.7 and 98.7 were getting their asses kicked. 88.7 doesn't surprise me; but 98.7 has had problems in Brighton/Genoa/Howell before.

I forget that I'm not near the TX like I was. Same with CBET. I don't get it like I used to.

I was going to mention that. Commericals are back! They definitely don't have many advertisers yet. There are some PSAs. I would expect all the commercials to come from the Canadian side now that they don't have a US ad sales office anymore.

I'm lucky to live in Canton. Never any reception issues with 89X or 107one.

Tonight, after the "Another 89X Original" tag: "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley. Just as a reminder to us that 89X would play everything. I think that's pretty cool. I don't specifically remember that song on 89X before it was everywhere else, but I'm sure it was.

I've decided that "Another 89X Original" refers to a track that 89X helped to popularize in the Detroit/Windsor area. The big songs that they played first. That tends to be 80s "classic alternative" or early 90s tracks, but it can also be Outcast or Gnarls Barkley. I guess it's more concise than "you heard it first on 89X."

Also heard another track tonight that I had forgotten was a constant on 89X: "I Hear You Calling" by Gob. More of that great Cancon. I love the Cancon! It's what made 89X unique. And I really like a lot of those tracks. I heard The Arkells "Oh, The Boss Is Coming!" this evening and that song is great. Mega, I had forgotten all about Bif Naked, too!

You know who they haven't played? Avril Lavigne. A bridge too far now? I was honestly surprised when they played "Complicated" when it first came out, but they did.

I love love Avril! I didn’t realize “I hear you calling” was part of CanCon.

I only ever heard it in middays but always wondered why that mushy made-for-pop radio song was on 89X.

They can let their girlie music station (93.9) play Avril Lavigne now. I don't need nor want to hear her music on 89X.

The Riff playing Led Zeppelin is exactly why I’ve argued with people who say that they’re an active rock station. To me, they’re strictly mainstream rock as active rock stations don’t play 50 year old songs from Led Zeppelin. That’s strictly classic rock.

The Riff playing Led Zeppelin is exactly why I’ve argued with people who say that they’re an active rock station. To me, they’re strictly mainstream rock as active rock stations don’t play 50 year old songs from Led Zeppelin. That’s strictly classic rock.

To be fair (and MW praised the Active Rock format), the Active Rock format is one of the main reasons Rock has become nearly useless as a mainstream force over the last 20 years. A lot of it flat out sucks. I took one of those "music tests" for Q106 a year or two ago and, had I not been given the names of the songs, I would have never been able to tell them apart. When we lost AOR/melodic Rock, we lost the middle ground.

As for WRIF, as a heritage station, I can see Zeppelin once in a great while. WRIF does lean heavily into gold. I'm sure MW would be able to give me the numbers. Most markets used to have at least one (if not two) contemporary Rock stations. Now? Some markets have none or have to rely on an outside market.
